DVC Opportunity

Given how cool the new Villas are, I'm wondering if the secondary markets in DVC points and maybe even Disney itself are full of deals. Anyone done any pricing recently? If there are great opportunities, I could wrap up Disney vacations for years at a great price now.

By secondary markets, do you mean resale? I know there are tons of resellers on the market, and a few that specialize in DVC specifically. AND I think you can buy resale directly from Disney. Definitely an emerging market.

The economy is probably leading lots of folks to ditch their timeshares; great idea to check it out...

People have to be unloading some points now don't they? Or start soon? I wonder though if Disney or other 3rd parties snatch them up and resell them at a more appropriate cost to keep the market hot.

As far as resales, you can save a little bit of money, but we found is wasn't worth it to buy from someone else and we ended up buying directly through Disney. You will probably never find spectacular resale deals (no matter how bad the economy) because Disney has the "first right of refusal," which means that if someone wants to resell their points, Disney has the option to buy the points back themselves and not let the deal go through. So when you see points for sale, they aren't all that much below market price.

The other disadvantage of resale is it can take 2-3 months for the deal to close. That means you can't start booking resorts for months! Buying directly through Disney, you can book 24 hours after buying in.

However, Disney is always running promotions. We just bought DVC this week (yay!!! yay ) and they are currently running two promotions. The first one is $6.25 off of every point at Animal Kingdom Villas (minimum 160 points). It saves you $1,000 off the purchase price and that $1,000 can be applied towards your deposit (that was a huge bonus to us as our down payment was much less). The second promotion was they gave us a bonus of 160 points to use at Saratoga Springs this year (they expire 10/1). So we were able to use most of those towards our week in January and we plan on renting out the leftover points.

Disney is also selling the new Bay Lake Towers at the Contemporary. They are also offering discounts, but they aren't quite as good as at AKV.

But in any case, we found it was a great time to buy and not only do we feel like we got some good bonuses, but we are very happy with the whole sales process. stars

Thanks, Joy! I forgot about the first right of refusal--that would indeed take many "deals" off the table. Also, I agree that if I were to buy DVC I'd want to start booking immediately---none of that 2-3 months stuff!

AND CONGRATULATIONS on buying! bighug Was it a tough choice to decide between the Contemporary and AKL?!??!? I would have found it painstaking! biggrin

I think you could flip a coin between AKL and Contempo to begin with, so if the sales guy is throwing in something with one or the other, that's the one I'd take. Plus you get a Zebra in your room at AKL right?
