Fort Wilderness Cabins

Our family is thinking about staying in one of the cabins for our next trip. What can you tell me about them? The last time I stayed in Fort Wilderness, we were in my parent's pop up camper in 1986. What are some things you recommend about this resort, since it has been sooo long since I've been there? Do they have Counter Service?

I can tell you that I've been dying to stay in one and would love to hear how it goes for you!

We have stayed in the cabins the last three times we have gone. They are private and quiet. The only noise we heard were the fireworks and a crazy owl. The quiet pool is nice and we encountered very few people at it as they prefer the larger pool area with the water slide and play area. We opted to rent a golf cart to get around ... a kind of treat for us but the bus service in the campground is adequate as well. There is a quick service at the main pool but it is open only certain hours so you have to take a boat the either wilderness lodge or the contemporary. We found that we became more creative at finding different quick service restaurants at the parks and even tried a few at other resorts besides those two. The resort is teaming with wildlife. When we were there a few weeks ago there was about 15 wild turkeys wandering around and we saw them everyday. Last october we saw lots of deer. On an early morning walk we spotted a mama with her baby. They were about five feet away from us. Very cool I must say. We have been to the hoop de doo revue and really enjoyed that. We also have eaten both breakfast and dinner at the trails end restaurant. A great buffet, lots of food choices. For the kids there is a chip and dale meet and greet sing along marshmallow roast plus a movie after and that is free. yay yay

My kids really want to do the BBQ w/Chip & Dale and sleep in the bunk beds. We'll see... Haven't decided yet for sure but knew there were some here that have stayed in the cabins and loved them.

We've been staying at FW almost annually since the early 90's. The kids have always referred to it as our "Disney Home" long before DVC existed. There are many activities, campfire, movies, canoe and bike rentals, golf carts, pools, etc.

I still think it's a great place and the cabins offer an exceptional value. On our second trip to WDW we were going to stay at CBR, but we couldn't get two adjacent rooms. The CM working on our reservations suggested the cabins (they were called Wilderness Homes back then). Like now, they slept 6 (plus a crib) and offered a full size kitchen and a ton a activities. It worked out perfectly and was cheaper than two rooms even without factoring in you can save big bucks on food by cooking your own meals. We have always had our own set of wheels. This made it easier to go off world to buy food and other stuff.

There's a website with a truck load of information. Check out http://allears.net/acc/faq_fw.htm

We especially like the Trails End Restaurant and Crocket's Tavern. One year we rented four cabins had a group trip with 19 family members.

On the down side, my family is pretty much grown. So on the last trip it was like sharing the cabin with 5 adults. There's only one bathroom, and it felt a bit cramped. However, when the kids were small, it was ideal.

Getting to the MK is easy. Just take one of the internal buses to the marina and get on the boat. Getting to the other parks involves taking an internal bus to the FW parking lot and getting another bus.

Post your questions and I'll try to provide answers.

It's interesting that you mention the wildlife, when we were walking from the Wilderness Lodge to Fort Wilderness one time we saw a deer just hanging out. You forget with all the Disney development that there's lots of undeveloped land over there.

We love seeing the wild life. Funny thing is a lot of people are in such a hurry to get here or there and miss it. There were deer everwhere last October.

Jan,I and some family stayed at the cabins on a few trips, and they were great, but for the cost of one night in a cabin now I can stay at Pop Century almost 3 nights.

The cabins are economical and typically the last housing to sell out. The last 2 trips we had 4 - 5 adults and it was more than a bit cramped. I think it's ideal when kids are small. Love the Trails End - great buffet. It's also fun to see the water parade at night down at the dock. All in all, a good on property place to stay for the money.

NHShorty - welcome to the Boards! When was your last WDW trip? Do you have another planned?

Definitely there is a TON of wildlife, all over property. Gators, deer, and lots of birds. In fact, regarding the birds, they've started doing a bird count every year to find out just who is visiting or living at Disney Smile

I have never stayed in the cabins but I have always wanted to. I have heard that Trail's End is one of the cheapest disney buffets and the food is awesome!

Just checked room rates fot the cabins at Ft. Wilderness.
about $300.00 per night at Fl. resident rate during value season on weekdays. Far cry from the $82.00 per night I'm paying at Pop Century starting tonight when I'll be there. But they are great to stay at.

Good grief! Might as well stay at a Deluxe resort for that price! WOW!!! Thought they were on the "moderate" resort side for pricing. Thanks, Joe for the info.

If price was never an issue and we could go to Disney all the time I think this would be a fun place to stay
