The "Great" Disney Rides

Looking at the Haunted Mansion tribute
made me wonder why some rides like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted
Mansion just endure so well. Is it simply a sense of history or do
those rides have a particular something that makes them difficult to
replicate. I love Expedition Everest, but I'm not sure in 20 years I'll
have the same feelings about it that I have for the Haunted Mansion. Do
you think it's just pure nostalgia, or are the great rides something
that are really hard to duplicate?

Great question. A lot of it has to do with nostalgia -- rides that Walt has his fingerprints on are fan favorites. Also, rides that people grew up with are always top on their lists. Maybe it has to do with the fact that there wasn't as much CHOICE as there is today -- there was more opportunity to create memories with a ride.

Is he still as enthusiastic about It's A Small World, or is he too cool for that at 16?

I think it's a bit of both, though I would weigh memories more heavily.

I was going to say! If your 16-yr-old loves Disney World, I need to take some lessons from you. I can only hope that my kids love it as much as I do someday. biggrin

I think a lot of people who have no memories associated with HM or PotC still leave the park thinking they're classic. They've changed enough over the years that there has to be something great about them at their core that appeals to people.

I, for one, was mortified when I heard they added Jack Sparrow to PotC. It's not that I hated the movies, but I felt like it would cheapen the experience (mind you, I think the movies went downhill after the first). Well, it didn't have that effect on me. Still LOVE IT!

For me one of the enduring aspects of these rides is that you notice something "new" everytime you ride them. There is just so much to experience on these rides that the pleasurable memory sticks with you. The fast, thrill rides are just that FAST...hardly enough time for the experience to be imprinted on your memory.

That plus both POC and HM just might bring up childhood memories of favorite books, movies, etc. and SW is just charming...what's not to like, a slow, relaxing ride in the wonderful air conditioning, with darling "children" serenading you!! OK, I know the song tends to get "imprinted" too but for me that's part of the fun...I can sing just "It's a Small World..." and send my DH off screaming awesome laugh

Oops...is that my alter ego emerging again...bad Malificent wink

They just do those rides SO WELL! And there must be some weird psychology they tap into in our brains -- haunted houses are always a draw in any park, as are pirate stories. They probably just know us better than we know ourselves.

(Which makes me question the Adventurer's Club demo all the more. hmph.)

This is a really good point that I hadn't really considered. The classics have such detail available and you actually have time to see them. Great point Millie!
