A Grown Up Field Trip - Treasures of the Disney Archives Chicago

The press release went out today that D23's Treasures of the Disney Archives Exhibit is coming to Chicago in October!

I emailed Becks right away to say we should go, and she suggested that we make it a WDWFG Meet-Up location! I'm waiting for word back from Brad so it's not "official" or anything yet but I love the idea of the Chicago area group getting together to check out this fantastic museum collection!

If there are enough people interested I can arrange for a group rate and boxed lunches.

The weekend after it opens is October 19th & 20th - who else is in for a Chicago meet and greet?

I'm one of them, but unfortunately, with a trip to California in September, another trip so soon is not possible. When DH was working, we had money, but no time. Now that he's retired, we have time, but not so much money! gaah

I don't know if it has been decided on which day of the weekend we will all meet. I might be able to go if it is on the 20th.

If we do decide to do this on the 20th, then for those of you who want to extend this into a Disney weekend, then I'd like to invite you to our monthly Windy City Pin Trading on the 19th, starting at 11:00.

http://www.windycitypintraders.com/

You don't have to be into pins to attend. We also do Vinylmations and other Disney merchandise. But more than anything, It is more of a social get-together of Disney fans.

I finally talked with Brad and we can't have an "official" meet-up due to insurance and legal stuff. That means that I'm unable to secure us a group rate and lunches. However - we are highly encouraged to meet up unofficially on our own and have a fantastic time!

I'm good with the Sunday October 20th as well. Let's do another headcount - who can make it on October 20th?

A Basic ticket to the Museum of Science and Industry costs $18 per adult. This exhibit requires an additional timed-entry ticket, which is $9 for adults. That brings it to $27 total for tickets, parking is an additional $20 per car. D23 Gold and Silver Members will receive a special discount on exhibit entry.

Tickets will go on sale at msichicago.org on September 4, 2013 - since it says that they have "timed entry" we'll have to wait until that is live and we can see what our options are.

I checked my work schedule and one of my teammates is in a training class Monday afternoon so I'm not sure if I'll be able to take the 21st off too. I'll check with my manager on Monday.

I am able to take that Monday off. I'm still a "maybe". I need to figure out the cost. I have a couple of questions:

- What area of the city is best to stay to be near the musuem? Any suggestions on hotels?
- Is public transportation close by? (I want to avoid renting a car if possible.)
- Which airport would be best to fly into for this area?

thank you

JoAnn,

Unfortunately, I don't live in that part of the city (far south side), so I can't possibly recommend hotels. I would end up doing a Google search or look up on a Google map, which is what you would do as well.

The location of the hotel will of course dictate the type of transportation. I think there is a CTA No. 10 bus that goes by it, and this bus originates from downtown Chicago (the Loop).

http://www.transitchicago.com/riding_cta/busroute.aspx?RouteId=171

This means that if you don't mind taking the bus, you have the option of staying in the downtown area.

Since it is on the south side, Midway airport is closest to the Museum than O'Hare. But I think it all depends on where you find your hotel. Both airports are served by CTA trains (Blue line for O'Hare, Orange line for Midway). Both trains go through the Loop. Unfortunately, the train lines do not go by the Museum. You have to transfer to a bus from the train to get to the Museum.

Let us know if you need any other info.

Thank you for the information Zz.

I'm going to have to pass. Sad

I had to have some emergency plumbing done today (darn water wouldn't shut off after I took my shower this morning). Luckily, it didn't cost a lot but that was on top of having some work done on my car a couple of weeks ago.

This is still happening on Sunday, October 20th right? The schedule is filling up fast for the next few months and I want to make sure I'm not double booking. Thanks!

Have we decided on what time and where exactly we will meet?

I've announced this to a few of the WCPT members, and we might get one or two more people joining us. How will we recognize each other? Secret handshake? Smile

Please, please post as much stories and pics for the rest of us Disney nerds. Chicago is on our list of US cities to visit, but it might be a few years til we get there.

We are still quite unorganized here, and time is running short, at least for me since I also have to make arrangements with a couple of other people on how to time this. Are we just planning on doing things on our own?

The museum opens at 9:30 am. The Disney collection tour is timed, i.e. they'll give you time slots on when you can start taking the tour. Once that time slot is filled, then it will no longer be available since they want to limit the number of people in there at any given time. So we are doing this together, we need to agree upon when we are doing this.

Unless there is a set plan already, then we plan on showing up at 10:00 am, get our tickets (you can buy them ahead of time online and avoid the ticket window. Not sure how they'll factor in D23 discounts that way, though). And then, maybe do the tour of the archives at 11:30 am.

We also want to do the coal mine tour, etc.

If I don't hear anything by Thursday, we are going to go ahead and plan on our own.
