Seven years ago Amy and I got married. We did the "big" wedding with the big budget,
big white dresses, steak & chicken with an open bar and wine on every table. It was
beautiful and the little white church we said our vows in was amazing. It was a perfect
day in every way, right down to the white carriage pulled by dressed out horses that
whisked us away from the church for a few moments alone together.
Sadly, our state doesn't recognize our marriage or civil unions, so while this was done
in our hearts it wasn't done "on paper".
Since the Federal Government has stepped forward and acknowledged same sex marriages
performed in states that recognize it..we have been talking about getting married "again"
in one of these other states. Although it will not help us when we get home on a local level,
it will allow us the federal benefits.
We tossed around various places that we might go and we talked about using our original
wedding date to keep things in line. We had pretty much settled on the East Coast,
one of our favorite destination spots so there was some sentimental emotions with
tying the knot there but then found out our original wedding date wouldn't work
due to work contradictions so..back to the drawing board.
Then the wonderful state of Illinois announced they had passed
their legislation! Whoo hoo! We frequent Chicago and am only 1.5 hrs away,
making it the perfect destination wedding.
And...this year is one of those unique calendar dates... December 13th, 2014
or 12-13-14 (hey, when you have 2 wedding dates to remember, you have to
make it easy!).
So, we are eloping this December to Chicago!
