I'm guessing Disney's pushing Aulani pretty hard right now at the DVC showplaces. Is there any reason to buy Aulani instead of at a Disney resort? What would be the pros and cons?

WDW Today did an episode about this a couple months ago (but I listened to it yesterday).
I think people on the West Coast would buy into there, since they would use it more. Us East Coasters would be much more likely to go to Disney World than Hawaii on a regular basis.

I wouldn't buy all my points at Alaunai unless I was planning on going to Hawaii every year of every other year. It's a huge resort so I don't think we are going to have trouble trading in there every now and then so if I were to do it all over again, I'd buy smaller points packages at several resorts and bank and borrow to get the 11 month advantage. Also IMO Alaunai is going to have higher Maintenance fees than Orlando as do most Hawaii resorts.
If I lived on the West Coast, I'd buy at VGC instead since it's a smaller resort and trade into Hawaii every few years or do a small add on in Hawaii to bank and borrow with. For me an east coaster, I'm happy with owning at SSR.

PA, you already have points at the Grand Californian, don't you?

Actually, according to the podcast I heard, it doesn't have the highest maintenance fees. AKL and a couple others are more

The maintenance fees are usually low when still in the selling phase but once the resort is fully declared and turned over to the owners, the maintenance fees at most resorts go up to where they should be.
Developers keep the fees low so they can sell their inventory. Hawaii is going to have higher fees because beach resorts just need more overall maintenance due to the salt air and higher insurance rates. The other two Disney resorts, Vero and HHI have fees higher than Orlando.
AKV has to feed and take care of all those animals. Someone's gotta pay that bill and it's the owners who do, not Disney.
Never thought about the AKV cost being for the animals! Interesting. I can see how the salt-water damage and insurance can make the beach resorts much more expensive to maintain.
I wonder if the WDW properties or the beach resorts get more wear and tear from guests, though.
