Sometime you find Disney stuff in the oddest places.
There are two Chinatown in Chicago. The one that is more popular and more established is the one south of the Loop. This is where tourists, out-of-towners, suburbanites, and other visitors go to. As you can expect, the prices for stuff also tend to be pricier.
Now, us locals usually go to the other Chinatown, the one on the north side on Argyle street. This one is populated more by southeast asians, i.e. Vietnames, Burmese, Thais, etc. And prices, especially for everyday goods, are cheaper than the other one.
I go to the latter area about once a month. Besides going to my most favorite restaurant for Vietnamese food (the Pho at restaurant 777 is outstanding!), I also do my Asian grocery shopping and one of the many Asian grocery stores there. It was at one of these stores that I unexpectedly encountered this:
Turns out it is a fancy Mickey plastic container and has candies in it. The writing is Japanese, which obviously may explain why I haven't seen it on the usual Disney retail outlets. But interestingly enough, it is also a piggy bank! It you look on the top of Mickey's head, there's a slot for coins.
So after you finish eating your candy, you can put money into it!
It costs less than $10 (I forgot exactly how much it was), and I have to say, it was rather cute, which was why I bought it. I have it on display, with the candies still in it, in the family room, and everyone that comes to the house keeps asking me where I got it. Their eyes open wide when I tell them "from an Asian grocery store on Argyle street!"
So this is my find of the month.
