Music: THE RANDOMIZER

So I'm a bit of a music freak and ZapperZ educating CDub on the Buggles got me curious what kind of music you guys all listen to! I personally listen to EVERYTHING! It used to be fun to ask what's in your CD player, but now-a-days I find its better to tell people to put their IPod, or substitute, on shuffle and tell me the first five songs that come up. For me it's:

He Is Your Brother - ABBA
Time Running - Tegan And Sara
Mendocino County Line - Willie Nelson
San Jacinto - Peter Gabriel
Melinda - James McMurtry

And rest assured I'm even more eclectic than that!

Good evening!

Wow, Brad, that's pretty eclectic. I'm a 21st-century Luddite, do not own an I-Pod, and still listen to CDs, of which I have more than 1,500. I store them in alphabetical order by artist and title (for nonclassical CDs) and by composer and featured work(Drunk (for classical CDs), and often listen to them in that order. I still buy new ones, listen to them in alphabetical order, and then pick up where I left off in my collection.

I recently received and listened to the following:

Stanley Jordan (jazz guitarist)--State of Nature
Earl Klugh (jazz guitarist)--The Spice of Life
Lionel Loueke (jazz guitarist)--Karibu
The Police--Live! (2 CDs).

I also received, but have not yet listened to, Max Bruch--Violin Concerto #2 and Scottish Fantasy, with Zubin Mehta conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Itzhak Perlman on violin.

So glad I can still say "what's in your CD player" to someone! I'm glad that new entries at least get a listen before they are returned to the queue. Otherwise it would be really hard to wait for their turn. Is Jazz Guitar a pervasive theme or is it just coincidence that 3/5 of your last 5 are from the genre?

Hi Brad,

It's a pervasive theme. I'm a guitar (and related instruments like the lute, theorbo, and mandolin) buff. Those three CDs came from BMG Music Service in a package for $14.98. I enjoy artists like Pat Metheny, Leo Kottke (folk guitarist), Mark Knopfler, Strunz and Farah, and Steve Morse (guitarist and principal songwriter for the Dixie Dregs who also played in Deep Purple and Kansas). I like blues artists such as B.B. King, Freddy King, and Robert Johnson; rock artists such as Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Journey, the Eagles (my favorite song of all time is "Hotel California", but I love the guitar jam at the end of "Dire Straits' "Telegraph Road"), and Santana.

I enjoy Pat Metheny quite a bit. I find him really accessible. Do you enjoy the "rock guitar" guys, like Eric Johnson?

I don't have any Eric Johnson, but I like Joe Satriani, who I saw in concert at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA (west of Philadelphia) on November 29, 1998. I've got nearly every Pat Metheny CD and have seen him live seven times:

3/18/1995 at the Tower Theater during the tour behind the CD *We Live Here*.
7/15/1995 at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in West Philadelphia, same tour.
2/10/1997 at the Theater of the Living Arts with the late saxophonist Michael Brecker, supporting Brecker's CD *Tales From the Hudson*.
11/22/1997 at the Tower Theater, *Imaginary Day* tour.
4/2000 at the Tower Theater, *The Way Up*.
10/31/2003 with the Pat Metheny Trio (included bassist Christian McBride and drummer Antonio Sanchez) at the Annenberg Center, University of Pennsylvania.
3/25/2006(?) at the Tower Theater.

Of the three big guitar guys (Vai, Satriani, Johnson), I always preferred Johnson by far. I always felt he was the most willing to sacrifice "Showing off" to really make a pretty song.

Hi,

I'm finding that a lot of my older CDs are starting to skip, especially towards the end, when they didn't skip at all the last time I played them. No amount of cleaning solves the problem. If the reason is that my RCA CD changer (which I've had since 2003) is getting old and is exhibiting tracking errors, then I just threw out four CDs (both CDs of George Thorogood and the Destroyers--Anthology; Georg Philip Telemann--Trumpet Concertos; and Richard Strauss--Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Also Sprach Zarathustra conducted in 1959 and 1961 by Herbert von Karajan of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) for the wrong reason. mad Jim

I've found that several of my CD players as they got old seemed to actually start damaging the CDs. In fact my car CD changer eventually got the the point where I stopped using it because it seemed to be destroying all my music. Or maye it was just time, but it certainly seemed awfully coincidental.

Did you rip them to a hard-drive ever? That's one of the best things about digitizing your music, you can't lose the media.

If you looked at my choices -
Anything Beatles
Anything Moody Blues (particularly 'The Story In Your Eyes')
Anything Jimmy Buffett
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game
Tie - Classic Todd Rundgren or 'ABC' (the British band from the 80's that did "The Look Of Love")

I've seen every McCartney tour since '76, and saw Ringo's All Star Band this past year. I've seen the Moodies too many times to remember as well as Isaak and Buffett.

Never caught Rundgren or ABC tho.

I live about an hour north of Nashville, which probably tells me why country "ain't my thang". (Too many Saturday afternoons as a kid when there were only three channels and one of them was Porter Wagoner and Flatt & Scruggs).

I love the Moody Blues, but I tend to like their less popular albums most. I love "Long Distance Voyager" and "The Present" for example.

My Randomizer:

Tom Petty - You Got Lucky
Chicago - Then Along Comes A Woman
REO Speedwagon - Take It On The Run
Boston - Amanda
Duran Duran - Hold Back The Rain

Interesting question. So, let's see what we find:

Karn Evil 9 (ELP)
Comfortably Numb (Floyd)
Don't Pay the Ferryman (Chris De Burgh)
War Child (Tull)
Mambo #5 (can't remember artist)

Interestingly, no country came up this time. But maybe God knows I'm not in a country mood right now. One thing that did come up was an interview with Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson regarding Bambi, but since it's not music I didn't include it on the list.

Now you got me curious what the next 5 would be. Let's find out, shall we?

Light my Fire (Doors)
Save a Prayer (Duran Duran)
Something from La Nouba (the ariel music I think?)
No More Tears (Enough is Enough) (Streisand/Sommer)
Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Flatt & Scruggs)

Impressive! I've always liked the 'Ferryman', and ELP was a BIG early influence on me. Second concert I ever saw was about 1970 or 71 and I saw ELP in Louisville. Theres still no sound quite like theirs!

I was going to comment on "Don't Pay The Ferryman" too. That's a GREAT song!

Don't Even Fix A Price!
Don't Pay The Ferryman,
Until He Gets You To The Other Side

A way under-appreciated song IMO!

No, it is just the newest in my collection. I have other Moody Blues CDs, including:

Caught Live + 5;
Days of Future Passed;
Every Good Boy Deserves Favour;
In Search of the Lost Chord;
Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970;
Long Distance Voyager;
A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra;
On The Threshold of a Dream;
A Question of Balance;
Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues.

Did I mention that I also have the guitar trio CD done by jazzmen Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, and John McLaughlin?

Ah I was just assuming due to the alphabetical order. I really enjoy "The Present." It's a bit different, but that's what I like about it.

That Guitar Trio CD is quite enjoyable.

Do you enjoy Mannheim Steamroller?

I'd have to rate myself at just a few songs because I haven't taken the time to explore more. But what I have heard of Tull I've liked. I guess my favorite is probably Bouree. I just love it when the music has something of a medieval feel to it but still has the drums and bass of rock.

King Charming and I were lucky enough to go see a Tull concert here in town a few years ago. They actually played in a very small venue.. an auditorium. And poor KC got a bit depressed watching all the grey haired pony tails walk up and realizing that despite his great hair (thick and brown with very little grey) he's part of that generation. Poor thing. And to go to a Tull concert and hit the restroom and not be overpowered by the thick smoke and not see drugs being sold in the restroom.... well, I guess they're right... you just can't go home again.

Wonder if today's kids pull the same kind of stunts as we did at their concerts? There's not many lighters around anymore. Guess they use their cell phones. LOL I even downloaded an app for my smart phone that was a flashlight/strobelight thing and one of the settings it showed a bic lighter flicking on. Guess that's for concert use, huh?

The problem with that of course is that if you drop your $500 iPhone in a dark auditorium, it is a much bigger deal than if you drop your cheap-o disposable lighter.

Paul McCartney says it is the most amazing thing when he does a song like 'Yesterday' to look up and see thousands of cell phones being held up as people call their friends and give them a "GUESS WHERE I AM?" type call!!!
