My first 5K was a Disney 5K - Trip Report

Hi Gang! Sorry I'm late getting this trip report started. As you know, my sister in-law and I headed to the World to run the Princess 5K. It was a MAGICAL experience for both of us. I think we may be hooked. And that says a lot considering I am NOT a runner by any stretch of the imagination.

Our short time in WDW started with a 6:45 AM flight out of Philadelphia on Thursday, Feb 18th. All went smoothly and soon we were in line for the Magical Express to the Poly. My sister in-law (who hasn't taken any trips on her own since my niece was born nearly 12 years ago) has always wanted to stay at the Poly, so I made it happen this trip. We had a smooth ride to the resort and arrived around 10:30 AM. We had done on-line check in but had not received word either way about our room being ready, so we headed to the check in counter. They checked us in and noted that they had our request for a 1st or 3rd floor room in the Fiji building on file and that we would get a text when our room was ready. So we checked our bags with the bell hop and headed over to the Race Expo to pick up our bibs for the 5K Friday morning. I'd like to say this was a pleasant experience too, but truthfully, it was total chaos. The crowds were nuts and navigating our way to find our bibs and then finding out we had to go to a totally different building to get our t-shirts and bags was a bit frustrating. I know they do that so you will go to the expo and spend money, but it would be so much easier if you just got all of your stuff at the same location. We grabbed our stuff and got out of there as quickly as we could. We hopped in a taxi because the lines for the buses back to the resorts were very long and $18 seemed worth it.

On the way back in the cab, we got a text that our room was ready. We had gotten our requested building, but on the second floor (the only floor without a patio or balcony). That was a bit disappointing, but considering we weren't planning on spending a lot of time in our room, we just shrugged it off. We got our bags, dropped our stuff on in the room, cleaned up a bit and headed straight to the MK. The crowd levels we moderate, and we had fast passes for BTM, Peter Pan, and the 7 Dwarfs Mine Train. We also had an ADR at Tony's for dinner.

This was my first time eating at Tony's. A friend of mine loves the place so I figured we give it a try. It was fine, but nothing special. The great part was that it was quick. We were so tired from having to get up at 3:30 to make our flight, and we practically fell asleep at the table (which is odd for me, because usually I'm so pumped up the first day). We finished eating, caught a glimpse of the light parade on our way out and headed back to the resort. We were in bed by 8:30 PM. Crazy I know, but we had another morning with a 3:30 AM wake up call because our race was the next morning!

Race Day -

Up at 3:30 AM for the second day in a row. Washed, dressed, teeth brushed, tiara on (well at least I had mine on - my sister in law is a bit more reserved) and out the door we went. We were on the bus by 4:15 AM on our way to the corrals. The atmosphere was electric. Everyone was so pumped up, and I love seeing all of the costumes (though I heard they were much more reserved than in past years due to the new rules). My favorite was a husband who was running with his wife. He had on mermaid scale leggings, a green tutu and a little mermaid t-shirt. He was totally in the spirit. I wish I would have gotten his picture.

So around 6:00 AM, Corral A took their place at the start line and off they went, followed by Corral B, then C, and so forth. There was about a 5-10 minute break between corrals to help space out the runners. Michelle (my sister in-law) and I were chatting with some wonderful folks who had done Disney races before and were giving us the low down, and I met a really nice lady named, Lori, who was on a solo trip and was running her first 5K as well. Everyone was super nice, and very excited. Soon it was our turn to start the race, and I couldn't have been more pumped. I told Michelle, to run her heart out (she runs 6 miles every morning) and that I would see her at the finish line. I so didn't want to hold her back. We started in the parking lot, down the road and into a back entrance of Epcot. It was so cool going behind the scenes like that. Cast members were all along the route cheering on the participants, and some even had on Mickey hands and were giving out encouraging high 5's. After running around behind the scenes, we entered the World Showcase from behind Mexico and did the loop. It was so much fun, I almost forgot I was doing a run. After running the WS, we zig zagged our way through Future World and back out to the parking lot to the finish line. It went pretty quick. After a few finisher photos, we headed back to the Poly to shower and change.

After cleaning up, we headed back to Epcot for the day. We had fast passes for Spaceship Earth, the Character Spot and Test Track, plus an ADR at San Angel (Michelle's pick) for a late lunch. To be honest, I wasn't super excited about this particular lunch spot, after reading some bad reviews about the food, but much to my surprise, we enjoyed our lunch and the margaritas very much. We worked our way around World Showcase taking the time to stop and look around in each country (something we don't get the luxury of doing when we go with the entire family). As we were working our way around, I texted JMed to see if she was at Epcot, and sure enough, not only was she there, we were heading in the same direction....the Grey Goose Slushy stand. We had a drink together and a snapped the evidentiary meet up picture and headed in opposite directions. It was so great to meet her and her mom! I love meeting folks from the wwdforgrownup!

We did some shopping, had a few more drinks along the way, hit Karamel Keutch and headed out around 8:30. When we got back to the Poly we headed to the Tambu lounge for a pina colada and some of O'hana's famous bread pudding which you can order at the bar. It was SCRUMPTIOUS and a great way to end the day!

Loving hear from all the runs! Great trip report so far! And I'm very jealous of your Poly stay. That is high on my list!

So, are you hooked? Are you thinking about which race you want to do next? The first words out of my mouth when I finished the Princess 5K was "that was so much fun, let's do Tink next year".

Day 3 -
Well my SIL got up early and went for a run from the Poly to the GF and back along the paths. I decided to sleep. When she got back and showered we headed to the Kona Cafe so I could finally try the famous Tonga Toast and get a real cup of coffee! Breakfast was great, but I was only able to finish half of it. While yummy the Tonga Toast was a little too sweet for me to eat it all.

After breakfast we hopped the bus to HS. We got there just after the park had opened and made a dash to Toy Story Mania (as we had a FP for Rockin Roller Coaster which is the same FP level as Toy Story). Five minutes after park opening and the stand by line already said 70 minutes. I told Michelle that we would take our chances, and I'm glad we did. The wait only ended up being about 1/2 that. From start to finish we were only in line 35 minutes. I absolutely love that ride. I'm glad to hear they are adding an additional track! We had a little time before our FP so we we walked around soaking in the sunshine and the atmosphere. The weather was gorgeous and it felt so nice being away from the PA winter. We hit Rockin Roller Coaster, and for the first time ever, it actually made me a little queezy. Might have been the Tonga Toast, but wow was I surprised. After that we sat on a curb watching the street performers before our ToT FP. Some guy had ordered an ice cream cone from one of the stands and was having a fit about how big it was. He kept saying, all I wanted was an ice-cream cone and they put some much ice-cream on it the had to turn the cone upside down into this cup. And then he kept asking us if we wanted some of his ice-cream. We politely declined. Has anyone ever claimed to have too much ice-cream? How is that a bad thing?

Anyway, on to ToT. We love this ride. Definitely one of my favorites. My SIL is so funny....she has a love/hate relationship with it. Screams of fear and laughs of delight, she cracks me up. After that, we did a little shopping for the kids...Liam wanted the Pew Pew Stormtrooper shirt he had seen in October and a couple of cars. Alaina wanted a 2016 t-shirt and some earrings, so off we went to find them. I also got Hubby a carrot cake cookie from the Writers Stop. His 2nd favorite WDW snack. His number one choice is the Mickey Ice-cream Bar, but given that would not make the trip back to PA the next morning, the carrot cake cookie won out.

After shopping we headed to Animal Kingdom and scooped up a FP for Expedition Everest. We were hoping for the Safari, but they were all gone for the day. It was late in the day, and the park was pretty crowded, but we managed to see some sights, walk around, hop on Dinosaur and use our new FP for Everest. We were taking our time really checking out all of the details in this park. It really is beautiful. We probably would have skipped AK all together this trip, but we had an ADR for Yak & Yeti. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for years, but it never worked out before. Those cream cheese fried wontons were a must try for me. We ordered two appetizers (Fire Cracker Shrimp and Egg Rolls), then I ordered the Lo Mein and Michelle went with the Tempura Shrimp and we split the two entrees. The food was pretty good. We also loved the atmosphere of the place and had a seat next to the window with the Tree of Life looming right outside. So dessert....Yes I loved those little wontons especially with the grilled pineapple. On our walk out (or should I say roll out - we were so full), I finally got to see Animal Kingdom in the dark. This has always been a morning park for me, but I loved seeing it at night. I was so beautiful.

On the bus back to the Poly, we decided to stop in our room for our jackets and then head to MK for extra magic hours. There were a few rides we hadn't hit on Thursday, and figured we might as well go out with a bang on our last night. I was pleasantly surprised at how low the crowds were. We walked right on Pirates,. We waited 20 minutes for BTM which we had ridden on Thursday, but have never ridded at night. Really Really Cool at Night!!! We headed over to the Haunted Mansion for a 10 minute wait. All the while watching the wait times go down for Space Mountain (which we promised my niece we would ride for her). I took Michelle for her first ride on the People Mover, then we hit Buzz Lightyear and then finally on to Space Mountain (our last ride of the night and of the trip). We waited about 40 minutes which wasn't too bad considering it had a 90 minute wait when we got in the park. When we got off of the ride, we actually got to see the Good Night Kiss (which I had never seen before). It was a great end to a very quick yet super fun trip.

The next morning we were on the Tragical Express back to the airport.

I have a few pictures, still in my phone that I will add once I get them downloaded. Thank you to those of you that encouraged me to run in my first Disney race and gave me such good advice. I think I may be hooked!
