We haven't been to Disney World in quite some time. There's a chance (unclear how likely) that I'll wind up in Tampa on business in the near future, but DW will not be with me. She thinks I should jaunt over for a day or two since we haven't been able to make time, but I don't think it's worth it. What do you think?

Absolutely! I love being in the parks by myself. And you can always bring DW a swell souvenir Besides, you'll get to see the Mickey Power Tower. Always worth a trip!
I was down there for a job interview once and only had half a day so I spent it at DTD, would have hit a park otherwise, it's very nice on your own.

DTD is an easy option, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way just to go to DTD. I'd probably need to ride at least SOMETHING.

If you need something to ride at DTD you really should try the Characters in Flight tethered air balloon, it is a really fantastic ride and well worth the price to ride it, the view is GREAT. Wife and I went up at night and then HAD to go again the next day in the daylight to compare and loved it both times. The wife is not the greatest daredevil when it comes to heights, but she absolutely loved it and we have gone a few more times on subsequent trips.
Is it about an hour?If I were you I'd at least head to DTD if you're apprehensive about going to the parks. I don't see anything wrong with going to one of the parks by yourself though.
Yes, about an hour...70 miles or so. WDW is much farther away from Orlando proper (southwest) than people think.

Like VL said, Characters in Flight is a great treat!. Scrappy & I have done it several times and loved it. Scrappy is the same way with hieghts but had no problem with this ride. If its breezy though it wont go up.
Or pop into Disney Quest, pay an exorbitant amount of money, and ride the virtual stuff there!
Seriously, though, I wouldn't be able to stay away either!
