New Year's Foods, Traditions (Yes, Another Food Post)

Wow! I'm all about the food today! Must be all that pent up frustration from not getting my holiday baking done...

I know that different areas of the country celebrate with different special foods on New Year's Day. Do you cook anything special on the first day of the year? I believe black eyed peas, greens, and cabbage are traditional favorites. We don't, but I wouldn't mind starting a tradition...

Growing up it was pork and sauerkraut in our house. I never ate it though. And to this day won't eat sauerkraut.

These days, Joe and I graze on pepperoni bread, the remains of the cheese ball he makes for New Years Eve, and whatever he has left over from his holiday baking spree.

We didn't really do anything special food wise, which I find strange since we are SUCH a food-based family!

My dad and stepmom started a pork and sauerkraut tradition somewhere along the way...I don't know if it was when they lived in Ohio or Chicago, but there was always BBQ ribs on the table as well...and that's the option I went for.

I've had at least two friends remark in the last couple of days that they do a different "international" meal each New Year's day. They research it and try to be as authentic as possible. Now, that's a tradition that I could really embrace.

Jeff - I love that y'all make a cheeseball! My grandmother always did, and hers is legendary. We carry on the tradition, although you don't often hear of them in today's hoity-toity, Martha-Stewart-esque world.

Catie - I know, right? We're the same way. And yet we just polished off a pizza so we didn't have to cook Smile

And I feel the same way about black eyed peas. The one - and only - time I ate them, I spit them back out. Now, it could have been the preparation method. But I thought they were perfectly horrid.

Hi,

On New Year's Day I usually go out for a meal. Yesterday it was Fuddrucker's, using a $20.00 coupon that Pam's parents gave me.

I'll need a direct exchange for money before I'm going to eat Black Eyed Peas. Although I like hummus so maybe I'm just being silly.

I don't think you are! I eat all kinds of other beans - love them! - but I didn't like the BEPs (well....or limas, to be fair.) The BEPs tasted smoky, like an ashtray tastes smoky. Again...maybe they were just badly prepared? I have no idea. Because I have no desire to try again.

Wait, I suppose that should read "like I imagine an ashtray tastes smoky" you know, never having actually tasted an ashtray.

Bah. I give up.

That's a lot of soups (including the chili)!

What's a fully loaded hot dog in your neck of the woods? I have seen fights break out over hot dog topping opinions. My fave is chili, slaw, onions, mustard, and ketchup. But during college just outside of Pittsburgh (norther WV panhandle to be exact) I couldn't get a chili dog to save my life.

Really? A friend of my MIL's in Atl cooked her collards with smoked turkey wings. DH says they were great. Of course, you'll note that I'm giving you his opinion.

But...hmmmm....come to think of it, maybe this would explain my bank account...my steadfast refusal to partake. On the other hand, I heard of another custom this year - don't do laundry on New Year's Day, or you might wash someone out of your life. My life needs a few people washed out of it. I did four loads. I will keep you posted. If they do disappear, I may have to revisit the whole collards-and-black-eyed-peas thing...

rolling Your too much Lizzy! I love black eyed peas and rice. Collards and BEP are not bad either, just got to put some bacon in there, bacon , bacon ,bacon, it's the ultimate seasoning.

Collard greens are also best if you don't try to compare them to anything. Like so many foods with an intense flavor if you come in expecting something like you've tasted before you're sure to hate them.

My family cooks and ham and a roast beef. We believe that you can't cook anything that can fly because your luck will fly out the window! Every other holiday we do ham and a turkey.

My family doesn't do roast beef for anything and it's my favorite option. What do you guys have with the beef?

With the beef we have corn, carrots, potatoes, shrimp scampi, lasagna, broccoli, brussel sprouts, yams, stuffed mushrooms, turnips, and other dishes that vary year to year. We also have 30 people so we have lots of options so everyone can eat.
