Olympics!

The Olympics have started! yay

What's the "must win" sport in your country? Here in the USA most folks just about die of embarrassment if the US doesn't win basketball gold, and Canadians consider the ice hockey gold a must-win in the winter games. What about wherever you live?

I was going to say, Canadians are more concerned about Winter Olympics but I would love to see Alex Despatie place in diving. I have a small girly crush on him. I like watching Beach Volleyball and all the water events but I don't really care how we do. I am all about Winter Olympics though. I go all out in my Canada gear and own every edition of those Red Mittens. I have to pick up a new pair for this year though because I can't remember where I put them.

Can I just say that over the years I have questioned my country and what it stands for, but today I am proud to be British.

We have done such a good job with this and we don't often get to show off but today will go down in history.

In regards to the sport, I would like to win the tennis and football but that is unlikely.

I'd be happy to beat our medals total from last time.

I feel the same, so proud to be British right now.... Other than the awful awful awful McCartney song...

I hate, hate, hate, HATE the coverage of the opening ceremony that we get here in the US. It isn't live, and they TALK too much!!! NBC has ruined the Olympics for me again.

OMG yes! Paul McCartney was awful!!!

I am just watching a replay of the opening ceremonies right now, and I love it. The cauldron lighting was fabulous, and the choreography and logistics of it all boggle my mind. Very well done!! And thankfully the Canadian announcers don't yap too much, so you actually get to enjoy it all.

I would like to see one of our athletes that isn't expected to win anything get a medal. I don't care which sport, but I love when a darkhorse steals the limelight.

I really hope the US gymnastics "Fab Five" take homw the gold! I'm watching the opening ceremonies right now. I loved how JKR read Peter Pan! I wish in the beginning when they did the "history" of England thing that it included more than just a few eras. Overall, I think the opening is pretty good. I would have loved to see the Royal Ballet do something, though. The giant villains scared me so much omg!

I'd like to see Phelps end his reign with some wins. It will most likely be the last time we see him in the Olympics. I love watching track and field, and basketball. My parents tend to root for Germany, but I cheer for US. This year I'm going to attempt to watch some of the less popular sports, it may require staying up pretty late though.

The American announcers said "Madagascar, which the younger viewers may recognize from the hit animated films..." at which point I needed to order another beer.

We got to the bar at the beginning the parade of nations, so we missed most of the crazy stuff, but I'm working on getting it so we can see all the Mary Poppins.

As a Brit I loved the opening ceremony and am proud of out nation Smile but agree the music was a let down, the only artists that performed just weren't good/impressive enough
They should have pulled out all the stops and had a really huge artist from each music era they covered!
but the story telling element was phenomenal Smile
as for sports I find the British don't excel in a particular sport but we all get behind the most promising athletes

I was so proud to wish I was British! rolling

I thought the opening ceremonies were fantastic, right up to the end of the parade of nations. I wasn't a huge fan of the route they went with the choice of lighting the cauldron. But then I had *really* wanted to see David Tennant at some point in the ceremony (I know, I am such a dork) and was sad that he wasn't there. I'm not a huge Rowan Atkinson fan and he was really the only nod to British TV that I noticed.

I was also really disappointed with Paul Mccartney. I couldn't decided if I was hearing sound/mic problems or if he just really shouldn't be singing any more. I'm a giant Sting/Police fan and had really hoped that there would be some sort of nod to them.

I'm not a big sports fan, but I've been watching the bicycle road racing and enjoying it. I can't say that I really have any sports expectations or hopes for anyone in particular.

Now, now, if Vancouver's closing ceremony taught me anything about the Olympics it is that they save the most fun stuff for the end. We may in fact get the Doctor at some point.

My daughter just told me that during the modern music section, during Bohemian Rhapsody, supposedly there was the sound of the TARDIS materializing. Hrmmm... I may have to go back and watch it again so I can listen!

That was one seriously fun opening ceremony. Beijing can keep its exercise in almost-inhuman precision. I'd rather have fun.

BTW congrats to GB on that gymnastics medal. And on an awesome, amazing Olympics.

Think we're going to pop some corn and rewatch it from the beginning tonight. I'm excited to see Rowan Atkinson, we missed that part. There's also a "drinking game" that we found for the parade of nations, but man, it sounds rough.

It's been a week now! How's everyone doing?

Geography is not a strong point for us! Smile

Also, we can't resist a good marketing cross-promotional tie-in!

Haha, I have to concede that fact. Sometimes they just say things that make me do a double take. The other night one of them said "Brazil's serves have been consistent - CONSISTENTLY BAD!" during a volleyball game. But as much as I complain about it, it gives watching the games an odd charm wink

And from Gabby Douglas to Michael Phelps, we've been having a pretty awesome year so far! muchlove

I love the Olympics - Just watched the Williams' sisters win the gold in doubles and Serena win the gold this am in womens singles. Wished I was at Disney watching instead of my couch.

I laughed myself silly at Rowan Atkinson.

I'm super late, but I loved the Opening Ceremonies. It was so refreshing to laugh instead of it being all "rah, rah, isn't the human race so great and complex."

I'm bummed because there's less than a week left in the Olympics. Imagine how bummed I'm going to be this time next week. sad

But I sure am loving these games. I'm awed by Michael Phelps and the U.S. women's gymnastics team. I'm having fun watching sports I normally don't pay attention to, like whitewater canoeing, weightlifting, archery, track cycling (the list goes on and on). I love to see anybody win - they're always so incredibly happy. I'm especially pleased to see the host country doing so well in front of their countrymen. Good job, Team GB.

It's wonderful seeing the crowd erupt when the host nation places clapping

Seeing Sanya Richards-Ross win was fantastic! So was her comment about displaying her Gold above her husband's Superbowl rings in the house.

My favorite part over the weekend was Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake getting Gold and Silver in their race for Jamaica. What a wonderful way to kick off their Independence Day. And wow, Usain has such charisma. He's the only one I've seen interacting with the mascots in that way! laugh

Hi,

This being my birthday week (Friday, August 10), I'm off work until next Monday. As I type this I have a Los Angeles Guitar Quartet CD in the stereo.

I enjoyed the opening ceremonies, especially the parade of nations. I cheered for Great Britain, Ireland and Portugal as well as the United States, for I am a mutt of English, Scottish, Portuguese and Irish descent. I know that Madagascar is a large island off the southeastern African coast (I had to look up its exact location), but I am a typical geographically-challenged American.

I also don't like NBC's Olympics coverage, but I'd better not join Twitter and say that, otherwise I'd get my account canceled. NBC must love tape-delay. I think the 1996 Atlanta Olympics were done the same way--and Atlanta's in my time zone.

Saw some field hockey, handball, table tennis, weightlifting, rowing, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis and badminton, but little of the "major" sports. Nice to see Great Britain shine, given the attention given to the fact that London's East End is a rough neighborhood. We here in the States only heard of Mo Farah's gold-medal win in the 10K, with 70,000 fans roaring for a half an hour. Kudos to London, a city I would love to visit someday.

Happy birthday, Jim!

What is this about your account being canceled if you complain about the coverage on Twitter?

Yahoo had an article in which a journalist criticizing NBC's Olympics coverage on Twitter got his account canceled.

Oh man, good thing I'm a nobody on Twitter. 50% of my tweets the past week have been making fun of the commentators!

That's extreme, but I'm not surprised. Did you hear about the guy who is being investigated because he was provoking Tom Daley on Twitter after he didn't get a medal? Crazy stuff.
