Purchasing a Magic Band, But staying Off Site..

Ok..Before I get back to the person who asked me this question today in my supermarket ( Living in a small town everyone knows I'm a Disney nerd ) They are off to Florida in September and are staying on I- Drive. But her kids ( 3 of them ) are wanting the magic bands..They have purchased their WDW park tickets for their entire stay..Am I right in saying there bands will only give them access to the parks and attractions, and won't be able to purchase food or drink..Also, after buying there bands at Disney, how do they get them linked from their tickets.?..Thanks for this..

As long as they have a Disney account, they can link their Magic Bands to their tickets, but if they're not staying at a Disney Resort, they will not be able to make purchases with their MBs.

From Disney's website:

Q. I purchased a MagicBand online or at a retail location. How do I link it to my Disney account so that I can use it?

A. If you purchased your MagicBand online or at a retail location, please follow these steps to link it to your Disney account:
1.Create or sign into your Disney account.
2.Link your MagicBand to your Disney account.

To use your MagicBand with FastPass+ service, both your MagicBand and valid theme park admission must be linked to your Disney account. If you have not already done so, please link your ticket, Annual Pass or package to your Disney account.

I am pretty sure they can activate them for you when you purchase them to right at the store, just make sure they have their ticket with them.
