A question at the Hall of Presidents

Ok ladies and gentlemen, I have a theme park attraction question that is driving me mad, maybe you can help....

So firstly we are all taught in school there are 44 Presidents of the United States of America (or so Obama said when he was sworn in)

However the attraction distribution for hall of presidents says "Behold all 43 U.S. Presidents on stage together in a patriotic celebration tracing the history of the United States."

The good Americans among us or the quick witted will know this is because Grover Cleveland was president twice, both in 1889 and 1893 with Benjamin Harrison in-between, because there was a president between his two outings in charge he is counted twice. so there are 44 presidents but only 43 men.

my question, does Cleveland stand up twice in the Hall of Presidents?

I think he acknowledges the second term but doesn't stand twice...as far as I can remember.

President Cleveland stands throughout the show just as he did throughout his two terms. No one ever saw him sit down in public.

We were there earlier this month, and I happened to notice that Grover Cleveland is only introduced once, before Benjamin Harrison. But not after. They go straight from Harrison to William McKinley.

Also, if I recall correctly, the only seated president who stands up is Lincoln. All the rest remain seated, or standing, throughout the show and just nod their heads as their names are announced and the spotlight focuses on them.

This is what I remember seeing as well.

They only list the names, but in the Morgan Freeman montage there is some reference. There are two presidents who stand up: Washington and Lincoln (alone on stage first) and Obama is already standing prior to his speech. I was there for the opening show and was SSSSSOOOOOO excited!!!!!

I am such a political history junkie, it's almost sad. I don't like politics much but the history of it and it's structure designed from scratch by men with only a vision is truly amazing.

yay yay yay yay yay

oldtink you and my husband would get along great as he is a 'history' nut and whenever he goes to Disney (which is once a blue moon) that is something we must do...however when he isn't there I skip right over it...sorry..but that is the truth.

I love history too! And cultural studies, and the arts. Disney "fills up my senses" (sorry, John Denver). mickey

Morgan Freeman's voice makes me shiver, so aside from someone like James Earl Jones, that already gave a sense of anticipation, but the history of the place, along with the history they are covering, is incredible. Each garment the presidents wear is made of cloth either from the period or made like they did in the period and sewn the way it would have been made in the period they lived. So many of those items are hand stitched! (sorry, but aside from history, I am a seamstress and have done many show costumes - including 1776! If anyone needs a full suit appropriate to the revolution I am your girl!!!).

I can watch the show many times over just to get the chance to look at the details! okay, I'll calm down now..... waiting

Oldtink I'm with you. I love HOP because I love history and I have to say I can't wait to watch "1776" on July 4th. TMC always airs it.

Is anybody there? Does anybody care? Does anybody see what I see?

But I don't have to wait - I've got it on DVD. biggrin

So do we - the Director's cut (has extra dance/song sequence) and our production dvd. Some of the songs, just give me goosebumps and many characters portrayed are as they were in real life- torn between wanting this new country and giving up on some of their intrinsic beliefs.

When we did the show, our lead (who is the band director to my DH as choir) was a devoted fan of the actor who played John Adams in the movie and on stage (William Daniels), so we wrote to his publicist and asked for an autographed photo for Chris. It took a while, but they pulled a picture out of archives of Daniels as John Adams and Daniels signed to Chris. When we handed it to him, he cried and it still hangs in his home office.

So when I look at the HoP, I think of men, not animatronics and see the story of our beginnings, and all that has come to be. For me it's not the politics, it's our history.

What can I say - I go the flag lowering ceremony too.....

oldtink, that's a great story about the photo of William Daniels, who did a superb job of playing John Adams in spite of being a little too tall and a lot too skinny. wink
