River County & Discovery Island

I'll be the first to admit..I've never actually BEEN to either of these places. However I know that these two places are pretty near and dear to the hearts of many who grew up going to these places. Recently I've been reading about how dissapointed people are that Disney has sort of let both RC & DI "go" so to speak and today I found a blog that pretty much creeped me out...
These guys (not so smart) swam to Discovery Island a few years ago and took pictures:

And then I found some pretty gnarly looking pictures of River County on DisMarks:

I don't really expect Disney to send a lawn care crew over there to take care of the overgrown bushes and stuff but what kills me is the debris that is all over the place! Crazy!

Wow, Bella that DISboards thread is amazing, really incredible. Though I never had an opportunity to go to RC, it is very sad to see it in such a state.

I used to love River Country! I still have my river country towel that I use each summer!

They took a huge risk swimming in there, but got a pretty unique experience and some great pics for the effort.

Guys that do this sort of thing are called "Urban Explorers" in th UK (not sure what you guys would call them) and have dedicated websites like http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/ to share their experiences and pass on tips. Some of the things they find tucked away in deserted factories or office buildings are pretty incredible.

I have a sneaking suspicion Disney is not pleased with them. Although I think it's okay to tromp around Discovery Island, isn't it?

That is so sad to see - especially the Boom Swing. I went there whe nI was 12 and spent like an hour doing that, so much fun!

I believe you can't just go explore discovery island actually. A few people tried with their own rafts and were stopped an turned away.

It is so sad to see RC like that! I watched my old home videos of the park recently w/ my grandma. We had so much fun there! I used to walk along those wooden trails over the water and collect huge snails and snail shells!

The Discovery Island blog freaks me out way more than the RC photos for some reason. The snakes in the plastic coke bottles?? The creepy voulchers....ack!

What was Discovery Island anyway?

River County..even though it's overgrown..looks seriously cool!

Makes you wonder what could eventually happen to the Wonders of Life Pavilion...

It really is weird that they just leave River Country decaying out there. It doesn't seem very Disney. I doubt Walt would approve.

A post about this a few weeks ago on another board mentioned seeing trucks in the area and other such action. None of these reports were confirmed though. I heard they were leaving it b/c the original plan was to re-open the park. I think the plan may have become to costly or complicated then previously thought and was scrapped.

I blame the nerve attacking bacteria in the water!

Just looked at the Discovery Island one; man, that is way creepy. The RC one is just sad to me, the DI one is like something out of a movie. Very Jurassic Park-like.

Wait a minute -- could this area be where they're building Golden Oak?

Golden Oak is an exclusive (read expensive) development being built over the next few years. IIRC, it will be on the site of one of the golf courses to the east of the Magic Kingdom.

I can't decide if I'm mad at those Discovery Island guys for breaking the rules, or if I find them oddly admirable for scoping out that island...

I think I like it..even though the entire thing creeps me out. I love how he admits that he didn't know at the time that the waters in Florida contained a bacteria that can damage your nervous system or whatever. Big whoops there dude.
