Has anyone had their room upgraded as a courtesy? I've heard of people asking the concierge and being upgraded. But in true Disney legend I've heard people getting complimentary upgrades. I wonder if this is true and if I should ask for it...

Oh how I wish I could say yes but...we have never received an upgraded room. Nor do we know anyone who has.
We've had an upgraded room at AKL once, from standard to savanna. It was about 10 years ago, and the September 2001 tragedy had severely slowed travel and tourism, so there were lots of empty rooms.
Recently we were given a king bed room at the Yacht club, which had a living area as well. Not sure if this was an upgrade or if we just got lucky.
We have been upgraded 3 times. In 2001 (pre 9/11) we were bumped up from CBR to Beach Club. In 2004 we were upgraded to concierge at the Boardwalk and in 2008 we were upgraded to concierge at the Poly. In all three occasions we did not ask it just happened.

Wow! I've never been bumped up to concierge anywhere! That must have been great! Which one is better? Poly or Boardwalk?

We got upgraded from a standard to a preferred room at All Star Movies once. I know it's not too fancy--but it was pretty awesome for us!

That's how we felt about it..I must admit being super upgraded must be pretty cool..I had a friend that went from Standard to a two bedroom suite at AKL..that is some kind of luck!!

Getting upgraded to a preferred room in Pop Century is nice ... getting up dated from CBR to Beach Club = JACKPOT! 
Back around 94 we got an upgrade from a rented Disney tent in the group camping area to a wilderness cabin due to a rain storm knocking down the tent. 4 years ago we got a free, extra, room for our 2 guests because the CM made an error in our room type.

No, nothing like that. Just luck I guess. I'm usually super nice to the CM checking us in.

I would love to stay in a Wilderness Cabin someday. They seem so cozy. I probably wouldn't want to trek to the parks from there, though, so it would have to be a week that I didn't want to get a lot done!

I was talking to a guy at work today who travels to Disney regularly. He was there in March, planning on staying at one of the All Star resorts. It was packed with kids. When they went to check in, they upgraded them (4 or 5 adults total - no kids) to the Yacht Club.

He didn't ask. They offered the upgrade to them. He wasn't sure what was going on. There were a lot of kids there. Since there were only adults in the group, they upgraded them.
