Yay JoAnn!
Just starting is a huge step - go you!
I only went twice last week. I was going to Saturday morning but woke up sick. Thursday night I took the water fitness class and swam a few laps. Tonight I took the step class.
Alright!! So we are approximately 57 days from ToT, 100 days from F&W Fest Half, 165ish days from Tink, and 202ish days from Princess (I'm going by the tickers, I didn't actually count the days, so forgive me if I'm off a day or two). How's everyone's training going?
Motivation is waning a bit for me. I skipped my track workout tonight in favor of sitting on the couch (don't I sound fancy with my track workouts!! I'll tell you a secret, I always come in DEAD LAST and trying to convince myself not to hurl. It's fabulous. Not!). Last week was 8.5 miles, half of it rolling hills. Happy that it's FLAT in Orlando!! Training races on the horizon include a 20K in 2 weeks, a 10K the following week, and a half marathon at the beginning of September. I'm happy to report that I may be slow, but I think I'm going to make it!!
I've been brain storming costume ideas. For ToT, since it's a villains theme, my initial thought was Scar with a yellow top, yellow skirt, yellow compression sleeves and fancy Scar-like makeup. Then I remembered that I'll be RUNNING in ORLANDO at NIGHT at I'm sure 100% humidity and figured I'd be a sweaty, make-up-y mess for the after party so I bailed on that idea in favor of the Chesire cat, which involves a glow in the dark t-shirt from Raw Threads and a super cute skirt from Sparkleskirts.com.
How is everyone else doing? Thoughts on costumes? As the miles get longer, the mornings get earlier, and the humidity and temps get higher, I'm looking for any motivation I can get!! I'd love to be inspired by your running accomplishments!!
We have made it to 8 miles in our training! We are having a bit of trouble with rain though. The last few nights when we were going to head out for a run, it started raining
As for costumes, I am dressing us as Rapunzel and DH will be Flynn Rider! We'll even have Pascal with us.
My costume for the Cinderella 5K will be Snow White. My friend who I'm running with will be Aurora. My cousin and her daughter haven't decided yet.
I am a slug - but I've still got until February so I'm not freaking out yet.

Here's a story of inspiration for those of us who need to step our training. Ok, that would be me who needs to step up. This woman is almost twice my age and just completed the "Dumbo Double Dare"

Wow! I hope I'm in that good of shape when I'm 81
I've got a question that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I've been doing good on our long runs up until a couple weeks ago when we did 9 miles for the first time. When we got back home I was sick It was sort of hot outside and I did struggle a bit during the run. Last week was only a 3 mile run which was hotter but I was fine. Then today we did 10 miles, it wasn't all that hot but when I got home I didn't feel 100%. I wasn't sick nor did I feel as bad as I did after the 9 miles but still, I'd rather not feel bad at all. Any idea as to what's causing it? Should I maybe try drinking more before/during my runs?
Hi Spook, I am no expert, but maybe you are just pushing yourself a little bit too hard. Do you wear a heart monitor? My DH just bought me one for my birthday and it is great because you can see how hard you are working (and calories burnt, I love that bit!)
Well DH and I have just got back from a run down a beautiful forest path by our house. It was my twelfth run and I got my half way to 5k badge. OK, so it took me 4 months instead of 4 weeks to get to this point, but I am confident I can do the next 12 runs before our Disney 5K in November.
no ticker
Spook, I would make sure that you're hydrating a lot the day before. I find that makes a bigger difference for me than drinking more water right before or during a run. Drinking too much water during a run makes me feel sick, and so does not drinking enough- it's a delicate balance! Hope your long runs start feeling better soon
Hi Spook -
When you say sick, are you physically ill (like vomiting) or just feeling tired and draggy? If it's the first, there could be an issue. If it's the latter, well, it could just be the distance and that it takes your body awhile to adjust. What are you drinking on your runs?? If it's really hot out and you're TOO hydrated, you may also be having electrolyte issues. I drink a fair bit of water on my runs, but I take several gus as well during my run, so it evens out. Do you do any sports drinks while you run?? Maybe something like a nuun would be good for you. Look also at what you're eating before the run. A little snack or something before you run can help as well. Keep an eye on what you're eating the day before you run too. I've noticed that if I eat too much protein or any sort of fried food I'm going to feel horrible on my run. I really try to eat clean-ish the day before I run.
Also try slowing down. On hot days you should be 30-60 seconds slower per mile. You can push for a 3 miler and keep your pace, but going much further than that, you may want to try going a bit slower.
Ultimately, I think running in the heat just sucks and makes you feel gross. Night time races in Orlando are going to be a challenge, that is for sure!!

Exactly what JMU said. I don't hydrate or fuel until I get higher up into double digits (14-15), but when it's hot outside, I have to do it earlier. The heat and humidity just kill you if you don't.
I will tell you that I did 10 miles last weekend and it was my first double digit run since May. I was *exhausted* the rest of the day, when just this spring I would knock out 20 miles with no problem. It just takes a while for your body to get used to that level of work.
You're doing great!

I threw up after the 9 mile run (only once though) but not after the 10 miles. After the 10 miles, I just didn't feel good but I perked up after eating dinner. My Husband and I split a bottle of water and a bottle of gatorade on our runs. I don't usually drink too much before a run so maybe I should try hydrating a bit more before we head out. I don't eat right before a run either because I find I tend to get side stitches more often when I do.
Thanks for all the tips! We only have a 4 mile run this saturday but next saturday we're up to 11
Thanks! I'm not sure. I couldn't find her. There were like 10,000 people in the race.
Good job!
Nice going Mandy!
Great job Mandy, You should really be proud of yourself.
Thank you everyone! I am proud. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make the ten miles but I got more encouraged with each mile marker we passed.
Yea Mandy you did it. You should be so proud of yourself.
You go girl!
Thank you everyone. I'm finally able to walk to normally again.
