Great job, Mandy! I LOVE that medal. I wonder how JMU did?

I'm getting so excited for the F&W half!

I finished....and ended up in the med tent BEFORE I got my medal (I made an AMAZING recovery once I realized that I forgot to get my medal before requesting medical attention). I'm working on my trip report now. Fabulous race, I just wish I'd been feeling better. Big battle between my brain (telling me to slow down or I was going to die) and my ego (I was really upset with my time). Finally had to listen to my heart and at mile 5 started running from photo stop to photo stop. I turned in a 2:29, I'm consoling myself with the thought that I spent a lot of time standing in line for pictures....here's hoping Wine and Dine will be better!!

Great job! awesome

I struggled my way through an approx 10 mile run today (it was supposed to be 12.5 miles sad ). I'm starting to think I'm not cut out to be a runner. I've managed to get over the feeling sick after the long runs. All your advice helped so thanks for that biggrin . However, today was full of knee pain sad Right near the end of our short run on Friday my knee started to feel a bit funny but then got better. When we did our long run today it started to hurt a bit at the start but I was able to keep going. After we hit the halfway point though I had to stop. It wasn't the worst pain I've ever had or anything but it was enough that I knew better than to try and keep going and make it worse. It was the worst run I've had yet. I'm not sure whats causing the pain but I hope it gets better before the W&D Puzzled

Ooh sorry to hear about your knee. Any injuries to knees (or backs) if not dealt with right at the start, can turn out to be long-term and re-occurring so I would get it checked out by a doctor or physio and don't run on it for a few days.

Running ten miles is a massive achievement and in race conditions with adrenaline pumping, I am sure that you will achieve the 13 mile half marathon, just get that knee better!

Spook, I am a pretty fit person too, but had to give up running for knee and foot issues too. I tried to push through them, and ended up with injuries that were not severe, but took 2years to fully heal!

I have conceded that running belongs to my younger years, and now I walk, as fast as I can!

awesome

I have not done a race since WDW 1/2 2010. Been sick but on the recovery now. And between all of you and my sister who just completed her 5th Disney race at ToT. I am getting back into training. May not do a race but at least going to get out there and off the couch.
Find it funny that I am the one that pushed my sister and now she is going to push and support me.

I just want to say to all of those who do not think they can to a 1/2 marathon and are worried about getting swept. I was right there with you. My pace is about 16mins walking more then running. But I was able to complete it in about 3:45 and wore my medal all weekend. YOU CAN DO IT! (by the way I am under 5 feet tall and have extra pounds everywhere. For everyone one step others take I take two with my little legs)

Thanks to you all and good luck!

Where in the knee is it hurting?? Have you checked the usual suspects (shoes: too old/not the right kind; IT band; etc).

Also, are you using a run/walk method, a la Jeff Galloway??

Sorry, I know you didn't ask for Help, but I worked at a running store for 4 years, so I have trouble minding my own business. If you don't care to answer, no worries!!

IsabelSnow - Get up off the couch, girl!! Next year, we're all doing a race weekend!! Smile WDWFGU Running Team!!

I really appreciate any help! My knee hurts just to the left of the kneecap, so I guess the side of it lol. The only way I can think to describe the pain is that it feels like there is a bruise there and someone is pushing on it (does that make sense?). I am using the Galloway method. I do 2 min run/1 min walk. I have wondered if it was my shoes. I've had them for about a year and a half. To my unexperienced eyes they look ok but maybe they're not. Also my knee only hurts when I run. I can even power walk and ride a bike with zero pain. It hurts a bit when I get up in the morning but I assume thats just stiffness from not moving.

To the left, like the outside? Sounds like IT band to me. Get two things asap: new shoes (that's reeeeally long for shoes, the breakdown of shoes doesn't happen where you can see it) and a foam roller. You can google how to roll for that. It hurts SO much but is SO good.

Even if the answer to the question is the inside of the knee, you really need new shoes. And a foam roller. Smile

Ok step one done last night towards getting healthy and off that couch. I found a 7 day meal plan on Active.com for marathon training that I am going shopping tonight to get healthy food. Also told DH that I want a bike with a baby seat to get my legs working again and bulid that muscle. He is going to get one to.
As Peter Pan says "Here We Go"

A weekend sounds good.

At the rate I'm going I'll be walking the 5K during Princess Half weekend. I'll be upgrading to annual pass in November. It only makes sense to get another weekend out of it, right?

Taratru has the right answer - it's your IT Band, most likely caused by your shoes. IT bands start in the hip and connect near your knee. Most people feel the pain in their knee, even though the symptoms may be higher up the leg. The foam roller SUCKS and is painful, but it is a runner's best friend. Sometimes a good sports massage concentrated on the IT band area can help too, but the foam roller is the first stop and usually a better long term investment.

It could also be caused by where you are running (not the most likely answer) but if the road is canted, you may be putting stress on one side or another. For instance, the path I run on slopes down to the right (as do most roads). I always seem to run right on the edge, so when I turn around, I run more towards the middle. Sounds minimal, but if you run the SAME road/path/trail every day, it does add up.

So I'm going to jump on my soap box for a second. This isn't to talk down to anyone, but until I started working at the running store to make a few dollars to pay some bills, I NEVER understood what a difference running shoes make. So I'd like to share the following....

Running shoes have a life span of 6-8 months for the average runner (or walker) or 300-500 miles. They break down from the inside out, so they may still look good (especially if you run on the treadmill), but they are out of cushioning. I highly suggest to any runner/walker to go to an actual running store and have an analysis done of your gait. Try on different shoes in your recommended stability category (based on your gait - either neutral, stability (slight correction) or motion control). A good pair of running shoes can be around $100ish dollars. I realize that can be a bit steep, so....if you find a pair you like, you can look online to buy them and usually get them a little cheaper. I hate saying that as a former small-business employee, but hey, sometimes you need to save some money!! Do not buy by color!! Do NOT!! If the shoe is correct for you, fits well, feels good, and they have options in colors and you prefer one over the other, then buy the one you like. But please do not just buy X color b/c they match your running outfit. Oh, and shoe companies change their shoes slightly every year, so you may end up not liking a shoe that you've been running in for years.

Finally, running shoes should fit properly, meaning they should have a little extra room in them in the toe area. Maybe half the width of your thumb. Your feet swell when running and this gives them room to swell. Same with width. If the laces are stretched to the max over the tongue of the shoe, you may need a wider size (here's a hint: a women's wide shoe is the same width as a men's regular, so women can get by wearing men's shoes in a smaller length).

Okay, sorry, off my soap box and apologies to anyone who's still reading. Now I must haul my butt off the couch where I'm snuggled with my fur babies and head to my running class....

I'm a walker right now. But I plan on training for the ToT 10-miler so I can run a little more.

Does anyone know if it's possible to strengthen ankles? I've sprained both of my ankles but my left ankle gives me problems after walking/running for long periods. I may look into getting a brace for it. My right one sometimes bothers me when I'm driving but that's it.

You can do a few things:

When sitting, practice drawing the alphabet in the air with your toes, one foot at a time. Also, you can tie a knot in a dish rag and practice picking that up (so you get the flex and point action in the ankle). Eventually, you can add some weight in there (put some dry beans or something tied up in the dishrag, keep the knot so there is something to pick up) to make it a little more difficult.

A brace is a good idea. Get rid of flip flops!! Those are the worst things ever for your ankles!

Yes. Google strengthening exercises...JMU has good ones right there. And don't wear a brace unless a doctor tells you to do so. Too many issues can come from that as well.

The only flip flops I wear now are the croc ones that have a little bit more support but I mainly wear shoes because I'm always working. (I know you are probably still going to tell me to quit wearing them anyway).

I thought about going to a doctor to discuss this issue anyway and about the brace.
