Skinny Minnie? Barney's Holiday Campaign

Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck Whittled Down for Barney's Holiday Campagin

"Barneys' creative director Dennis Freedman said their makeovers were a collaborative effort with Disney. "The animator and I sat next to each other and went over every detail of the clothes - how they're made, what material, how they would move - to get them as accurate as we possibly could," Freedman told WWD. He even brought in a model so they could study her movements and facial expressions and apply them to the illustrations. "When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion. The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don't change. I said, 'If we're going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,' and they agreed."

I'm not a fan of those pictures. She's not my plushy Minnie. Do you think this will be a successful campaign for Disney and Barney's?

I truly hate skinny Minnie, I just think that it sends the completely wrong message. There's a skinny Minnie painted on the wall at TrenD and it drives me bonkers. There's nothing wrong with Minnie's regular body, but obviously something wrong with how poeple are designing clothes if they only look good on a stick.

At least they should be able to change a light bulb without the need of a ladder...?

I agree. They are horrid looking...

HATE IT comes to my mind. I find it very hard to believe anyone would care for it.

From a design view, these are bad. Looks like their legs are going to just snap in half. From a body acceptance view, they're even worse.

I'm sick to death of them 'skinny-sizing' everything! Minnie and Daisy look awful, they could have given them a bit more shape than a bean pole! Eating disorders are already scarily high amongst teens and young adults, how does this help? This just makes it worse, I'm surprised Disney are OK with these images. I don't think Walt would be impressed at all!

The first thing I thought when I saw these images was how could Disney be ok with them! I completely agree with the above comments about what a terrible message it sends to an already overly body conscious society. It makes me sad how much importance they put on being skinny sad Even mice and ducks are not safe anymore!

I think they are grotesque. I myself have weight issues myself and I don't think we need to see an anorexic Minnie or Daisy. Why can't they leave things along? I agree "Walt would not be impressed."

I don't get it, but I don't get fashion period, so I thought it was just me not getting it.

Can we just say NASTY? I would have to agree that Walt would not like this at all. Why mess with a great thing???? I too, think it sends a very bad message to our youth that you need to be skinny. You just need to be yourself!

I saw this latest piece about the "Skinny Minnie" hubbub on HuffPo and I quite agree. The response is pretty patronizing.

Disney and Barneys Are Sorry that Minnie Mouse Activists are 'Misinformed'

Do you think this whole mess hints at deeper issues with our society (duh)...or it's really just a lighthearted, stylized holiday display?

When I read that one I really thought it belittled just about everyone. There are even Disney's who have signed the petition to get it changed. And even if it was a dream, Minnie Mouse should not be shown dreaming of being a stick figure, she's much more together than worrying about that sort of thing, and so should the rest of us be. I thought Disney's response was just awful.

This is a HUGE hot story right now, the past two weeks it has been all over google news and just doesn't seem to be going away. I think that Skinny Minnie sends a very dangerous message.

Sure they weren't.... Wait for it...... MOUSEinformed?

Me... Like I said. They are horrid looking. Almost scary. But it's just the cartoonist style. If your gonna complain about that... Then complain about all the princesses being skinny.

I don't like it either. It's obviously someone's marketing ploy, and if it had been approached differently ( Minnie falls into a taffy puller, or catches something from Stretch Armstrong) it might have been more palateable. But it was still unecessary.
