Talking about the mugs...again

I saw an article yesterday: http://travel.usatoday.com/alliance/destinations/mouseplanet/post/2011/07/Walt-Disney-World-Resort-Update/178366/1

Basically they were talking about how the new mug chips will be tested at All Star Resorts soon. They talked about this a bit in the article..but they were saying how the dispensers would only work if the chip was present. What about the paper cups? Apparently there was a rumor (according to this article) that paper cups would ALSO have the chip. Holy waste of money. This is just speculation though but it's a good point..if the dispensers will only work if the chip is present how are other people with regular cups going to fill up? And what's to differentiate between a paper cup without a chip and a mug without a chip?

I'll be interested in hearing about guests experiences with this mugs & chips.

But seriously, if the drink thieves are causing that much of a problem--why not just do away with mugs then? This is all getting a little ridiculous. But that's just my opinion.

I would imagine those chips really one cost about 0.00006 of a cent, probably less than the paper

Really?? I guess I am envisioning something crazy like the one they put in my dog. But then again I am not high tech..and we all know that.

you wanna know how much the one your puppy has actually cost to make?
Roughly the same price MAYBE as high as 50 cents
Most chips are actually really cheap to create as they are mass produced
It's the mark that blows
It's the highest percentage of markup from anything in the world

You would never know that by the how much they charged me to put it in him..they got me with their whole "But what if he runs away..won't you be sad?"

Still think it would be cheaper to just make a different cup every year, and during the switch out... have a week or two grace period.

No they don't. We have had the same design now for at least 3 years now, thus why people keep bringing back the same mugs every year which is why this chip thing is being instituted. Yellow handle was last year, and the red and black 2 years ago.

This could be this years... unless its confined to just one resort. But they don't change them every year.

Like Mase we have a ton of the black and red mugs. We got the beach scene in January and they were not chipped. Years ago each resort did have their own mug. I will have to dig in our closet to see if we have any of those left.

All I can think of is that its different at each resort. But every time we go down... its always been the same ones. Even when we go to different resorts.

Here is a mug shot of our mugs that I could grab real quick. If you look close you can see some resort names on some of them. The blue winter looking ones in the top right corner just have a date of 2007.

No the new ones for this year are the ones with the pinkand blue lids in the center of the picture.
They were still selling the red mugs in January but had switched over to the other ones by june when we were there.

Do you know if thats all of the resorts? No matter what... we always buy ours... but would just like something other than the red ones I guess... lol

I wasn't sure about the switch--the last time I went we did not buy one and they had just started the universal mugs. We have a ton of the resort mugs. We have that ASMo's one that you have Scrappy! Plus AKL, and Port Orleans.

Interesting. Yes...we got the pink one in the middle in May at Wilderness Lodge. We have a few of the old style ones from cast member days.

We have two of those winter 2007 ones. Also have a blizzard beach one from the same trip.
