Total rookie DDP question

I'm thinking that a great thing to do for our anniversary/W&D trip would be the Deluxe Dining Plan...that would give us lots of snacks for the festival booths, but also LOTS of table dining credits that we could use for signature dining experiences. So, here are my thoughts...I would LOVE to hear your feedback. We are pretty food-oriented...there is no such thing as too much for us. Smile

Sat 11/9: arrival in early pm, race the W&D half that night, post-race party until 4 am
Sun 11/10: our actual anniversary, F&W festival (using snack credits)
Mon 11/11: F&W festival (using snack credits)

We would stay until Wednesday, which leaves us 12 credits each to use on four days, which we would totally be able to do and love it.

My question is, would we be able to buy 4-day park hopper tickets with only 4 days of DDP to use from 11/10-11/13? Or would we *have* to buy the extra day of DDP for 11/9, when we wouldn't really even use it?

Also, if I'm buying our park tickets through runDisney, will we be able to add DDP? Does anyone know that?

Thanks for listening to all that meandering! biggrin

I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that your dining plan credits are based on the # of nights you are staying, and not the # of days of your park tickets. So it shouldn't matter - but you can only get the DDP for the nights you are staying.

From the Disney Food Blog:

Guests on the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan receive: Three meal credits and two snack credits per person, per night of your package.

As far as runDisney, I don't think you can buy the DDP if you buy tickets through there. Also from the Disney Food Blog:

How do I buy the Dining Plan?

The Disney Dining Plan must be purchased as part of a Magic Your Way package which includes your Disney hotel stay, theme park tickets, and the Dining Plan. There are some modifications to this requirement for Disney Vacation Club members and Walt Disney World annual pass holders. Unless you are a DVC member or AP holder, you can ONLY get the Disney Dining Plan if you also purchase a hotel stay and park tickets as a package.

Here's a link to the Disney Dining Plan FAQ from the Disney Food Blog, which might help:

And I hope folks will correct anything I've passed along that is not current or correct biggrin

If you book your room through the rundisney phone number, you should be able to add both the dining package and the tickets there. I haven't priced the tickets through them to compare to the online store, but I would hope (key word: HOPE) that they are the same discounted price. I've made 2 reservations through that number (NOT the regular Disney reservation number - but the one on the travel page for rundisney.com) and both times I've been offered a dining plan and tickets. You can add them up until a few days before the check in date (I think - I'm a little fuzzy on that b/c I'm not planning to do a dining plan and I'm still debating buying park hopper tickets or just sucking up an annual pass).

Also - You mentioned that you are arriving early afternoon of the 9th, which is race day. Don't forget: you need plenty of time to pick up your race packet at ESPN Wide World of Sports. I've also heard all the fun schwag that you can buy (and any freebies from the vendors) sells out the first day, so you might want to consider getting in a little bit earlier.

Thanks guys! I will call that runDisney number before I do anything, I guess. I was hoping to rent DVC points and then buy runDisney tickets with the dining plan....not sure I'll be able to do that. I should though, right? I mean, what do they tell DVC people who come - no DDP for you?

JMU, I would love to be able to come the day before, but it's just too many days off from school...I will probably have someone pick up my packet just in case we don't make it, but there's a flight that gets to Orlando by noon. For the WDW Half, we arrived at the expo with only FIVE minutes to spare. Smile It's better if I don't have a ton of time there, so that I can save my $ for the parks!

^^ Now that is a true statement. It's so easy to get sucked into the excitement and spend WAY too much money. My running friends love to tease me b/c I LOVE me an expo!!

I also rented DVC points (just confirmed TODAY that I got into AKL, so I'll be calling to cancel one of my rundisney reservations later this week). I looked over the info I received and it says I can add the dining plan, doesn't mention that I have to do it along with tickets, but you do have to pay in full when it's booked - and it's booked by the member who sold the points that were used to book my room. I used David's DVC Rental, so I'm not sure if that varies from rental site to rental site (I would guess not, but who knows). Maybe it's a little less strict since it's a DVC member's points and many DVC members already have annual passes?? I don't know. If you want to go through David's and have questions, let me know.

Awesome news for you on your rental! I'm still trying to catch Eeyore's lady that she recommended. I hope something works out...If not, we'll have fun at POR (since we've never stayed there either). Maybe I'll see you at AKL! Smile

Thanks for the info. Will you let me know if you find out anything else?

My wife and I did the DDP our first time. NEVER again! We both eat well / love food / etc. However 1/2 way through our 9 day trip, we found it challenging to eat 3 huge meals a day plus and the tempting free snacks. Not to mention how many disney dining options aren't the most healthy, so we felt stuffed all day! At the end, we wasted a lot of meals, and spent a lot of days feeling guilty when we couldn't manage to eat 3 meals a day.

For our next trip we are buying to groceries to do our own breakfasts and carry in lunches. We'll budget for one fancy dinner per night, and we should be good!

I totally agree with you Drew--the first year we stayed on property (11 years ago), we got the DDP also. We did nothing but eat for 10 days! Try eating 3 sit-downs each day, PLUS rides, PLUS shows PLUS pin trading--well you get the idea!

Now we don't get any DP. We eat breakfast at Boma (we stay at the AKL), and dinner either in the parks or nearby resort hotels. We have found that since we eat only 2 real meals a day, it is actually cheaper to pay for the meals and not use the DP. And we eat at pretty expensive restaurants for dinner--most require 2 meal credits.

We also got the TIW card and found that to be a big help financially.

The TIW isn't an option for us, since we're not FL residents, AP holders, or DVC owners....is that something I'm misunderstanding?

Normally, I'd never think we could use the deluxe DDP. But if we are using all our snack credits for F&W kiosks during Sun/Mon, then that leaves us 12 table service credits, which we would use on signature dining for all four nights (using 8 each) and then maybe a character brunch, along with a breakfast here and there. Do you guys think that's doable? (Trust me when I tell you...we can eat. It's why I marathon! Wink )

I just thought that would be a great way to hit a ton of signature dining that we would never do with the kids, while also getting to enjoy the best of the F&W festival. Or am I just looking to spend $? We would probably spend at least $50/day without it, and that's eating pretty much the standard plan. So I know that plan would be enough regularly...it's F&W that I'm trying to include, and the signature dining. Thoughts?

Unfortunatley you are not misunderstanding this Sad DH and I were really disappointed by this fact too as we were planning on buying one for our next trip with my sisters.
