Off the wall phone/camera question

This is fairly off the wall, and I've done no research on it, but I wondered if you guys/gals might have some ideas.

It involves interfacing a good digital camera with a Blackberry for the purpose of loading photos to the web.

As I surf various news groups and Twitter, I see a lot of people on trips uploading photos direct from their smart phones. (Primarily iPhones)

Since I don't have an iPhone, don't intend to get one, and don't have camera capability on the Blackberry I was looking for an alternative method to use in the field. Maybe a cable that would connect the two?

The camera I use is a good quality Casio Digital EX-P505. It is probably the fifth one I've owned and I like it so much it has been the one I've kept the past four years or so.

The OTHER possibility I have is to get a separate phone with a good quality cam that I can use for this. I actually have two cell phones, but really don't carry the other one much. Any ideas of a good phone on the Verizon network and a simple data plan that I could utilize? This is probably my best outlet.

Does you Blackberry have a USB port? I wonder if you can interface them that way.

So, your goal is to be able to upload pictures from your digital camera to the internet without a laptop (or other computer with internet connection) right? There are several easy ways to do this. You can get a USB to mini-USB cable for your BB to facilitate the transfer from your camera. You could also just use memory cards compatible with both (check to see which formats your camera and phone use, many cameras use the same format(Drunk as BB phones). For me, as a technogeek, if this is something you do all the time I would recommend picking up a netbook. They are stripped down laptops that are designed to excel at internet-related applications. They are much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than normal laptop/notebooks. With a netbook, you would have all the capabilities you do at home, but in a very portable package. They start around $200 new. Other options are cameras with the ability to upload directly to the web (with an internet connection) and BB's that do have a camera (the camera on current gen BB's are quite good - for a camera phone).

Update to this.

I'm changing to the new Blackberry TOUR. Tiz a FINE piece of machinery and offers a 3.2 MegaPixel camera and full motion video.

Should have it in the next couple of weeks, as I'm still "wheelin and dealin".

A friend of mine actually switched from another carrier to Verizon yesterday and got HER Tour for $49.

Good call. Like most things (contrary to popular belief), these transactions are very negotiable. Just have to talk to the right people - which usually means someone other than the clerk at the local store or CSR (customer service representative).

I keep feeling like maybe I should check out blackberries. You guys seem to know quite a bit. I feel like in the IPOD mania that's been going on that blackberry is maybe cutting some deals to keep their market share. Has anyone seen evidence of this?

I think the iPod is one of the coolest things ever, but theres no way I'd give up my Blackberry for it. The lack of a true keyboard keeps me on the Berry.

There aren't nearly as many aps available, but it does every single thing I really NEED to do which primarily includes synching to Microsoft Office, receiving emails and (soon) shooting video and pictures.

Service providers always have promotions (like buy one get one free). Main thing to remember though, as mentioned above, is that the prices AND terms are negotiable. If you've been with one company for a number of years, you do have some leverage.

I still have about six months on my current plan. I'm actually not excited about changing my service, but I'm dying to get a new phone.

My friend who got her Tour for $49 switched companies. For some reason though, she wasn't able to port her number which I thought was standard these days.

That's what really concerns me. My cell is my primary phone, so everything is tied to that number.

Shouldn't be a problem. Any time the person at the store tells you you can't do something (or they won't) you're under the impression you can; don't just go along with it. Often times they're wrong, or lazy, or trying to upsell. I'm going to change my number soon (still have my old TN cell number) and I'm going to pick a number that works for me - as I use it for business also. They'll tell you, you're just going to get the number they assign; but you can choose from available numbers. I'll let you guys know how that goes.

Can we take you with us to negotiate for us?

Might run into some logistical problems there wink Be glad to share what I know, however. If any of you have problems with your service and want out of your contract; that can be achieved too.

p.s. I do not, nor have I, work for a cell phone provider.
