What's up next for the Disney Cruise Line?

I was reading a site today about the next phase of the DCL being cruises farther afield--Tokyo, etc. Is that a rumor, or has it been confirmed? Now that they'll have four ships, will all four be doing the Bahamas trips or will two be stationed full time in other waters? Any info appreciated.

Nothing concrete yet, but one of those ships should end up on the west coast for Mexican cruises. We had a story a couple of weeks ago that both Long Beach & LA are trying to get that ship in their ports.

Haven't heard about the other one, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it spend a major portion of it's time in Europe.

Like Love Boat. (Is it just me, or does everyone get Love Boat flashbacks whenever they hear port names like puerto vallarta?)

I just feel sorry for Isaac. He was the only bartender on the whole ship! nyuk-nyuk laugh

Can't feel sorry for Doc. That cat got a LOT of "action"! (Shouldn't fraternizing with the customers be against ship policy or something?)

Speaking of fraternizing, I've never been down there, but I understand that the crew has their own entertainment section down below, complete with bar and other stuff. I'd love to go on that type of backstage tour sometime.

I've seen info on the travel channel that woud support that. Doesn't the crew have their own pool as well?

And does the DCL have those types of backstage tours? I'd think that would be one of the most interesting activities on the ship (and probably worth paying for).

The crew pool is at the very front of the ship. If you stand along the railing on the top deck (in front of the basketball court), you can look down over it. I've rarely seen anyone using it, and I think the last time we sailed it was actually empty.

As for those tours, I agree that they would be worth going on, but I've never seen them offered.

Is that part of the sales pitch of working a cruise? Do you get to relax and enjoy the amenities when you're not working?

I would guess. I don't know if they HAVE enough amenities for me though. The work that those people do is incredible. Think about the wait staff. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as the late night stuff. When the ship is docked on CC, many of them work there too.

I would assume with tips mamy of them make better money than they could make in their own countries (since the vast majority of them are foreign), but they experience seven day weeks for months at a time and I suspect their living quarters make the DCL custmer's cabin look like a penthouse.

I'm like you thought, I'd love to actually SEE what is offered to them.

I have once or twice while on shore run into ship's staff who are enjoying some leave. I guess when they are in port, the limited operation of the food services and with the on board shops being closed, there is more opportunity for them to get away.

Ahh, so do they hire a lot of people from the ports of call? That makes a lot of sense.

These are generalities, but the wait staff is from all over. There tend to be a are a LOT from the former Soviet Union and the various countries sprung from it. There are also a lot of service management from the UK but they truly are from everywhere.

Captains tend to be Scandanavian. Maintainance staff is from all over.

Amazing too, how much of the staff is at sea for six months at a time with a spouse and family back home.

I think it takes a special breed.

As a side, the father of a guy I went to high school with was a physician. After he retired, he used to sign a 'Ships Physician" contract farily regularly and he and his wife would go sailing.

Yep--I think those folks sign 6-month contracts and then take a few months off. They really are working round the clock when they're on the ships!!

That would be killer if your spouse got a job on a cruise ship and you just got to go all over with him or her for free!
