What's Your Level of World Cup Interest?

How much attention everyone is/will be paying to the World Cup. I don't pay much attention to the friendlies to be sure and I'm a fair weather fan who will only pay attention if the USA over-performs, but I know England and USA's first games are against each other which sounds like a lot of fun! We're at least respectable lately so maybe it will be interesting. Will you be watching World Cup matches? Or at least paying attention to the scores?

I'm not huge football (soccer) fan so will be avoiding as much of it as possible. The British press have usually gone into overdrive with it by now but this year have seemed a bit more subdued.

Do you know what the consensus is on the odds of GB being a contender?

The nations that make up Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) compete in international footbal as individual nations rather than as Great Britain. England are the only one to make the competition this time and are aparently rated with only having an outside chance of winning.
The Scot's and the Welsh will be cheering for anyone who is playing against England laugh

It's the same for international Rugby, however the Olympic games is entered as Great Britain with a team made up with athletes from all of the nations.

If a 'united' team was entered for the World Cup, the chance of success may improve.

Good point. I was trying to use as many abbreviations as possible and I used an improper one! I didn't actually realize that they all competed together in the Olympics. I learned something today!

I used to follow international soccer as a kid, when Germany was a real powerhouse. Don't pay much attention to any more.

I suspect the Patriots wouldn't be too good at what the rest of the world calls football. silly

The respective 'football' players are similar nowadays though. Both consider a hangnail a serious injury.

Do you have an interest in soccer the rest of the time? Or does the World Cup just fire up your patriotic pride? I can't honestly say I pay a lick of attention to soccer the rest of the time.

I'm particularly enthused about USA vs. England. I think it's one of those rivalries where the other side doesn't think we're good enough to be a rival, but we think of it that way!

If I catch a game on TV, I get excited and watch it. I don't follow the MLS, but I do really like it. But I kinda like almost all sports (except for when people just hit each other).

It is tough, because I am cheering for team USA, but also for Slovenia because that is my heritage...of course they have to be in the same group!

I hope I can watch the game tomorrow, I have some online friends from England, so we will have some fun on twitter!

England vs. USA is such a fun matchup. We can make fun of each other in English!

MLS was getting pretty big here in Dallas, but I feel like it's burned out a little bit. I kind of like the name change to FC Dallas, but everyone I know who actually likes soccer watches British soccer.

It's kind of sad that I'm so proud of a 1-1 tie that we got by an unforced error. USA! USA! USA!

I think England is probably more upset than we are happy.

Someone on twitter put it best "Hey England fans: do you feel as good as I do? Because if you don't, it wasn't a tie."

I just saw the Slovenia won this morning over Algeria (I wasn't awake for the game) so that is exciting!

The nest two games for the US will be the important ones since they are the favorites

This is a great line. It made me laugh out loud.

dislikes soccer. waiting

I played for a while when I was younger and I just never enjoyed it. Softball and Volleyball were more for me. So, no Worl Cup viewing on my TV!

It's weird how in the US we all play soccer when we're young and then immediately lose interest.

I just glanced at the scores and if I'm reading this correctly, USA is currently losing to Slovenia 1-0. I don't think a tie with Slovenia will be viewed as win as the tie with England was...

EDIT: oof, make that 2-0

Apparently there was quite a bit of controversy with the officials in our game as well as some others today. Lots of hub-bub about it. Someone said "In America, we might not care about soccer, but we hate losing!"
