Will HP Land Be "Dated?"

In discussing the current Harry Potter Land madness I got to wondering. Do you think in 5-10 years people will think of HP as a weird tribute to a fad? Or is HP transcendent enough that people will still be big fans in a decade?

I think that is a very good question. On the one hand the HP books & movies have been out for close to ten years now and they are still as popular as ever..however we are still anticipating the last two movies. Once the movies are done and the hub bub of the park dies down it may loose its popularity fast. My guess is that in 20 years they will have changed it so some sort of mythological world themed area of the park or something..

Maybe it'll be like Mickey's Birthdayland and will change every 5 years or so!

Seriously, though, I could see it going either way. If the books and movies become classics like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, I think it could be a long-term draw.

It's an interesting question. There are things that were HUGE in the 70's that were already kind of dated by the 80's. I think Harry Potter is pretty universally beloved and probably has more staying power than a lot of things, but the fact that no new stuff will be released will make it questionable whether it will have a "timeless" aspect. It really probably depends on if kids keep picking it up and reading it even after there are no new movies and books.

I would like to know if the land/props/attractions THEMSELVES will be dated. That is, if we go there in two years when it's not quite so crazy, are all the animatronics and doodads going to work? Seems like this is going to be a very high-maintenance endeavor.

As far as the appeal, I think it's going to be a winner either way. The theming itself is pretty universal (no pun intended) if you think about it. If HP falls out of favor in say ten years, they could easily remove the licensed HP aspects and still have an awesome land with great attractions.

I've returned! And as for "an awesome land with great attractions...." I don't think so. Sadly, Universal did this theme park in true universal style...half assed. Yes, it is worth a trip for a day if you are a HP fan and the novelty of trying butterbeer, pumpkin juice, and eating at at the three broomsticks was great. However, it did not have enough appeal to get me to book a universal trip or stay in universal longer. When I get to that part of my trip report I will explain! If they re-theme, they are going to need more land bc this part of the park is very very small and cramped and I don't know how they will expand or if they even have more space in this area. It was a very small amount of park space to squich in such an attraction as Hogwarts.

Welcome home, Jess! I hope your trip was magical, even if HP Land wasn't laugh

Thank you for this insight. I look forward to hearing more about it on your trip report. We're still wondering if we want to spend a day here or not.

Welcome back! Can't wait to hear more. "Small" is one of the top adjectives I've heard about HP land.

HP took us a few hours since we wanted to eat at the three broomsticks and try everything else. Besides this we don't much like Universal so a few hours is all that was needed. It's worth it to take a day and check out if you are a HP fan.

Thanks for the info, Jess! Did you have to wait to get into the land, or was it not that crowded? I've heard horror stories!

If you go over around 5:30 6PM you have to wait for the attractions but not to get onto the island! We walked right in. It was packed though. 2 hours for forbidden journey. 1 hour for Olivander. 45 mins for Honeydukes shop. Dragon Challenege Coaster broke down like...every hour so we just skipped it. 3 Broomsticks had a crazy wait to we just ate dinner at about 8pm and had no wait.

Thanks for the info! That's exactly what I needed to know as we're trying to decide whether to go over early or late.

I wonder what the hours are for the park. Will have to go look that up...

I'm a fan of Harry Potter but I don't know how excited I will be to go see the park in 3-5 years.

Woah. Is this a particularly busy time of year for Orlando? I've never been in May and I don't know US school easter break times

Peg - Easter Break (or Spring Break) has about a 6 week window here. My daughter's SB was the third week in March this year, but others didn't have theirs until mid to late April. It's crazy, and makes it kind of hard to plan for. On the upside, it does spread out the crowds a bit. From what I gather (and what I've experienced) May isn't too bad for crowds, but it can be really hot. We're hitting low to mid 90s right now, with no relief yet from afternoon storms.
