Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still dominating the global box office following its record-breaking opening weekend. The film earned an all-time industry-high $248 million at the domestic box office last weekend and had an all-time record global box office of $529 million.
As of Tuesday, December 23, the film had earned a domestic box office total of $325 million and that includes the record-breaking $37.3 million the film earned JUST on December 23.
Thanks to the overwhelming (and unsurprising) success of the film Disney now holds four of the five top film debuts of all time.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens also had the biggest Thursday preview gross at $57 million and the biggest Friday and single-day ever gross at $119.1 million. And, the film also set a Sunday record on December 20 with $60.5 million.
And if that's not enough, the film is currently the 40th biggest US grossing film of all time and the 81st biggest grossing film of all time (this last one is thanks to the $689 million it has earned worldwide as of December 23).
All of these box office records means that The Walt Disney Studios is celebrating its highest year on record having crossed the $5 billion mark at the global box office for the first time ever in a calendar year. The previous record was $4.73 billion set in 2013.
It seems to be a safe bet that The Force Awakens will come close to the $1 billion global box office mark this weekend.
The Force has most definitely awakened.
