With 10 months left until Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters, fans have been wondering about plans for Episodes 8 and 9 in the franchise. Well, you can wonder no more. Bob Iger, Disney's Chairman and CEO has confirmed plans for Star Wars Episodes 8 and 9 to complete this new trilogy of Star Wars films.
The confirmation was made in a Disney shareholder report where Iger stated that he "...can assure millions of Star Wars fans who have spent the last decade hoping for a new movie this one will be worth the wait. And it's only the beginning of a new era of exceptional Star Wars storytelling."
Iger concluded the statement by confirming that Episode VIII will arrive in 2017 and Episode IX will be released in 2019.
The first stand-alone Star Wars film will be released in 2016. Director Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) has signed to direct the spin-off film but no other details for that film have been released.
The stand-alone film will reportedly be based on Star Wars characters, but there's no confirmation if the characters are from the original films or from The Force Awakens.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives in theaters on December 18.
