As Orlando and the rest of the world continues to mourn the victims of Saturday's mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub, the Walt Disney Company has announced a $1 million cash commitment to the OneOrlando Fund.
The fund was established this week by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to assist those affected by the attack. In addition to the cash commitment, eligible donations from Disney employees will be matched dollar for dollar by the Disney Employee Matching Gifts: A Program of The Walt Disney Company Foundation.
Disney World cast member Jerald Arthur Wright, 31, was one of the 49 people killed in the shooting. He was a seasonal employee who most recently worked in merchandising on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom.
The Walt Disney World Resort is also providing complimentary accommodations for the families and friends of the victims.
Cast members and other employees at Disney World can donate blood at five designated locations at the resort.
An informal and unofficial gathering is planned at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 at the Magic Kingdom to show love and support for the Disney and Orlando communities. Members of the Walt Disney World community will meet at the Partners statue near Cinderella Castle. The event is not sponsored by Disney and all are welcome to attend. Park admission is required to attend.
And finally, in the wake of the shooting Disney has increased security measures at its theme parks. In a statement a Disney spokesperson said "we have increased our security measures across our properties adding such visible safeguards as magnetometers, additional canine units, and law enforcement officers on site, as well as less visible systems that employ state-of-the-art security technologies."
