Vivoli il Gelato is known for only serving up freshly made gelato, and amongst the many high-end gelaterie in Florence, Italy the world-famous, 85 year old, family-run gelato shop reigns supreme. But you don't have to take a trip to Italy to get a taste of the cold and creamy treat, because the family's second storefront was opened in none other than Disney Springs.

I've been trying to make a stop in for a sweet scoop for a couple of vacations now, I'm happy to say that I finally made it in last week. The little shop makes its home on The Landing, just across from The Boathouse and Hangar Bar. Just like the original store, Vivoli il Gelto has a simple exterior with just one door in and out. A small sign next to the door lists the fresh flavors of the day. A handful of small tables sit in front of the building, but there is no real seating to speak of; be prepared to grab your gelato and enjoy it on the go.

Inside the door Guests are welcomed into a no-nonsense space. Seasonal selections and coffee menus share the wall behind the counter with an assortment of large family photos. The counter itself is simply a large freezer box full of colorful gelato and sorbetto. Step on up, and place your order for one or more of the delicious flavors of icy goodness. You'll have a minimum of 16 gelato choices to pick from, plus assorted fresh sorbet. And did I mention that there are the cookies?

To make their gelato, Vivoli starts with three simple ingredients, eggs, milk, and sugar. These are then combined with nuts, spices, or fresh fruit purees to create stunning flavors. Next the mix is cooled and slowly churned. It's this slow churning that produces the velvety smooth texture and richness gelato is known for. Guests can order their gelato in several sizes of cups, waffle cones, or as fun Italian floats.

It was pretty hot outside when we stopped in at Vivoli il Gelato, so we chose a cool and refreshing Arancia Sorbetto, made with Fresh Florida Oranges. The first bite was smooth and delicious, with just the right hint of orange zest. The sweetness though was almost cloying, on such a hot day. I highly recommend picking up a bottle of sparkling water to help cut the sorbetto syrup that lingers on the palatte.

I couldn't resist the cute little tarts sitting amongst the pretty Italian cookies next to the register. Vivoli often has a selection of seasonal tarts made with a dense, sweet pastry dough. Each one is hand filled and decorated, mine had a thin layer of raspberry jam topped with a heart shaped cutout of the Pasta Frolla dough and sprinkled with sugar. The little tarts are perfect for snacks, but the dense, incredibly sweet dough wasn't offset enough by any tartness in the jam.
