The original Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland was the last attraction that Walt Disney oversaw the construction of, opening just three months after his death in 1967. The attraction earned raves from guests and by popular demand a version of the attraction debuted at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida on December 15, 1973. Much beloved by Disney fans of all ages, has spun off a major franchise in its own right with multiple attractions, stores and special events, five films, books, board games, and appearances in more than a dozen video games.
Located in Caribbean Plaza the attraction sites at the farthest point into Adventureland from the Castle Hub. Housed in a golden Spanish fort called Castillo Del Morro, the plaza is guarded by the watchtower Torre del Sol. Guests enter at the base of the fort as the dimly list and winding queue travels down to dungeons. There they find its inhabitants in a never-ending game of chess before continuing on to the docks.
After climbing aboard a sea worthy ride vehicle guests are treated to a roughly 8.5-minute ride, propelled by jets of water first through a mermaid grotto and a hurricane lagoon, they are warned that "Dead men tell no tales" before the boats plunge into darkness and down a 52 foot waterfall. Escaping the turbulent water the boats emerge in the middle of a battle, dodging canon fire as pirates attack the fort.
From there it's a gentle cruise through a plundered and burning town besieged by this rowdy pirate crew. Originally the attraction told the story of this bunch of 96 audio-animatronic "really bad eggs" chronicling their drunken exploits. As the town is overrun and set a blaze, mayhem ensues while the merry band of brothers sings "Yo Ho... Yo Ho... A Pirate's Life for Me" and we all want to raise a tankard of rum in salute. This is not the most politically correct attraction, but over the years the revelry has been scaled back a little with food becoming the object of many a pirates desire rather than women. But we still "wants the redhead."
In 2006 the attraction went through a major and controversial renovation to include icons from the popular movie franchise such as Captain Barbossa, and Captain Jack Sparrow. While many fans of the classic attraction were unhappy with the changes, new fans were able to experience the fun and experience the magic of Disney in a whole new way. Without doubt, this fun attraction for all ages is one of the Magic Kingdom's best.

I love the fact that they joined new with the old. I am sure since the live action movies came out people expected to see Jack Sparrow and Barbarossa.

This has been one of my favourite rides at the MK since my first trips there as a child in the early 70's, and it has become one of my own family's favourite rides as well. What ever else we may decide to skip or bypass on a particular trip to WDW Pirates of the Caribbean is certainly not one of them! We never pass up the chance to ride it multiple times.
