DVC Question

So..each time we visit the world, we discuss purchasing DVC. We come a little closer each time. haha. I think my hubby was bit by the bug because we've been home for two weeks and he randomly checks wait times at the park on the disney app! laugh

I am sold on the DVC. I know it's worth it. I actually calculated buying new from Disney and it works out to cost us about $800 per year for a vacation, that's with fees. So, my hubby finally said we could possibly buy in the next year. I have some questions that maybe some of you could answer....

1. Is 160 points enough? Can you go at least once, maybe twice per year? I know it depends on the time of year. I was looking at like grand villas and some of them are over 200 points for a week so taking our family would be hard.

2. What perks do you receive by purchasing new via Disney v. buying resale?

3. What resorts are currently selling? We like the EPCOT resorts, but it seems those are all sold out...

4. How many of you actually visit other areas like Hawaii, Hilton Head, Vero Beach? Are they nice?

5. This is kinda personal, but would anyone be willing to share how much they pay each month for their VC and fees?

Thanks guys! I am one step closer!!! mickey

I think that's enough if you will mostly be staying in studios and the occasional 1 bedroom. We started with 160 and I didn't find it to be enough for a family that needs a 2 bedroom.

"Enough" is subjective though. The amount of points you spend each year will change depending on which resort you chose, what type of room you want (size & view), and what time of year you want to go.

What do you mean by perks?

If you buy resale you can only use the points at Disney properties. You are not able to use the RCI exchange.

Through Disney I think it's Saratoga Springs, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Aulani and (soon) Grand Floridian. Buying resale always varies.

I haven't visited those, but I own at Grand Californian in Disneyland in addition to my main Animal Kingdom Lodge contract. I plan on going to Aulani someday but it's not in the cards right now. I have friends that have stayed at Hilton head and Vero Beach and have loved it. I've also cruised on my DVC points, and stayed at the DVC affiliated hotel in Chicago which was awesome.

I pay a total of about $280 a month on the 160 points that we still have financed through Disney. We bought at $112 a point.

Wow. I've heard points isn't worth the cruise. How many years did you save points for that?

Where is this Chicago hotel? Did you book through the exchange program?

Dollar for dollar, you are correct in that it's not the most economical use of points to book a cruise. I spent 198 points +$90 booking fee for a 3 night Cruise for 2 people. A lot of DVC members will rent out their points for the year for cash, and then use that cash to book their cruise. That seems like a bother to me. I have never gone the path of making sure I squeeze every ounce of dollar value out of my points, many people do. Part of why I love DVC so much is that I'm horrible at saving money but DVC just comes out of our monthly bills and is all taken care off. I don't have to think about it. I would have never booked a cruise to begin with if it hadn't of been as simple as picking up the phone and saying "do this."

Like the having the Dining Plan, for me one of the best parts of DVC is that the money is already taken care of and I don't have to worry about it. I just have to pick up the phone and book. Done. If I need to reschedule I don't have to mess with deposits or coming up with more cash on the fly, I just call member services and the magic happens.

The hotel in Chicago (The Whitehall) is part of what DVC calls the Concierge Collection. It's a little different than the RCI exchange because it's an actual hotel and not another time share service.

We own 160 points, and last year we used 158 in a savannah view room for 8 nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge. If you stay in a standard studio, you may be able to get in two trips in a year, depending on the time of year you travel and number of days.

As I understand it, when you buy resale you cannot use your points for the Disney Collection (all non-DVC resorts and Disney cruises) and another specific collection of non-Disney resorts that Disney has chosen. But you can still use your points for all DVC properties and the RCI properties (500 or so?). A previous poster said you cannot use RCI if you purchase through resale but I know you can, unless they changed this in the 9 or so months since I purchased resale...I would absolutely purchase resale again.

If you buy resale, you can pick any resort you like, except the Grand Floridian because it has not made it to the resale market yet. If you buy through Disney, they will try to direct you to those properties they're currently marketing (GFV, AKL, maybe BLT?), but they will also try to accommodate you if you like another resort. And I think they'll put you on a waiting list if something is not currently available. (They buy back properties all the time by exercising their right of first refusal on the resale market, so properties are coming in all the time.)

We have not yet, but definitely plan to!

We do not have a monthly payment but our annual dues were around $900 last year, I think. You can get a good estimate of your dues by looking at last year's dues per point and doing the math.

Good luck!

For our family, a resale was the best option. We paid about 1/2 price per point. We won't ever take a cruise or use the points for RCI exchange. In our figuring, and you have heard right, anything other than a DVC room is not a good use of points. But, like Kristen, it's the convenience and the options you have. Since we would never use the points for anything other than DVC resort stays, it didn't make sense to pay twice as much to buy from Disney.

We have 160 points, and in buying our resale, I made sure that I was buying a resale that had 100% banked points coming up for the next Use Year. So, we closed on 160 points at the end of October and on December 1 (our Use Year), we got 320 points because of the 160 points we purchased and the 160 points that had been banked. We have been able to stay ahead because of the banked points that came with our contract.

Oh, me too, I just assume that we can't use our points for anything but resort stays, so it sounded good to me! biggrin

160 points seems fine depending on where / when you stay, and keep to a studio. I originally bought 160 pts at SSR, and after using my first 160 pts, I decided to add 50 more, so that I can bring my extended family ( bother, sister, nephews) down.

We are bitten by the bug too and have made a few offers on the resale market. For me it was a no brainer, we want to own at AKL, $145 direct or about $70 resale. Resale you can't use points for cruises or concierge collection, which we would never use anyway. We have a certain amount of money available to buy with, so we either buy direct and have the points now, or buy double the amount on the resale market but it takes longer due to the buying aspect of it. Double points but taking longer.... I'm patient Wink

Oh and just to add, we were thinking of 160, it then rose and rose and now we are offering on 250 and 270 point contracts Wink

We have 240. For us in the UK it depends on the exchange rate! I am lucky in that I have a checking account that does not charge me extra for overseas transactions so I pay about PS225 a month. We are planning to look at the hotel side of things one day but are happy to go to AKL at the moment. I would love to buy into the Poly when it happens (if we could afford it). We are looking at next year and think we could do 2 trips. We have to think about the air costs.

I bought back in 1999 at the Boardwalk - then added more at Beach Club and more again at AKL...I have 400 points and find it perfect for a large extended family. Depending on time, we can get a 2 BR for a week and still have enough left for a studio or 1BR for a long weekend in the same use year. I like that we can bank points for a big blow-out year!

Yea, I think we will start looking at 200 points. I just think if we want to take our family with us, 160 will not be enough for a 2 BR...

Thanks everyone!

We have 160 points. Buying a resale, we had 160 banked, so we started out, as DVC owners, with 320 points and have been able to bank a pretty good amount each year.

This year I have booked a 2 BR Garden View at BWV for 9-28 thru 10-4 and then a Studio Garden View at BWV for 10-4 thru 10-6 and will still have 20 points to bank. Of course, we started this Use Year with 285 points. SOOO, 200 points would have been WAY easier to work with, but we were able to make it work with 160, THIS time.

You could always book 2 studios, rather than a 2 bedroom, to save points. Sleeps the same, but you would not have the washer/dryer that comes with a 2 bedroom.

I would suggest resale as well. Price to purchase BCV or BWV from Disney for a new member is $130/pt, and minimum purchase of 100 pts. Resale contracts are in the $80-$85/pt range.

Good luck!
