Favorite Restaurants In Your Home Town

I love to travel and all you guys seem to enjoy food so I thought we could do a topic where you list your home town and some restaurants you recommend. Extra points if they're off the beaten path and we probably wouldn't find them in a guide book.

Dallas:
Texas De Brazil - We've spoken about that one.
Houston's - Great burger and the spinach and artichoke dip is to die for.
Campisi's - Probably my favorite pizza in Dallas.

This is a great idea . . .hopefully the next time I travel, I will think to look back on this thread and try some of these places.

Cleveland:
Melt: Grilled Cheese Sandwiches (with a twist)

Sorry I don't have more for Cleveland, but it is one thing I always complain about is that there is no good food here, that I have found yet.

Minneapolis/St. Paul (where I grew up):
Snuffy's: Great 50's-esque dinner and malt shoppe
Nook: Wonderful burgers with the cheese INSIDE!
LeeAnn Chin: fast food chinese, but it is good and I miss it terribly
Vesuvio: Great little Italian place by the U of M
Famous Dave's: BBQ Chain (we have one here in Cleveland, but it just isn't as good as the original)
Space Aliens: the food is regular burgers and chicken type stuff, decent quality but nothing the grabs you, but the atmosphere makes it so much fun to go to

I am sure I could list more if I sat and thought about it, but those are the ones that jumped off my mind first

I've always thought Minneapolis/St. Paul should have some great food. I've never been, but it just seems like a place that's cold so much they've got to counter it with comfort food! Smile

My first place to list is near Buffalo, NY -- my hometown. We really like Wing City Grill in Fredonia, NY. Delicious wings and some great cheese fries.

More to come later! I've lived a million places!

I LOVE Melt in Lakewood! They have the best soups too!

The Cleveland Area has a lot of good Mexican - Nueva Acupoca (sorry if I am spelling it wrong) is fantastic, so it Luchitas which is in Lorain County.

I edited to add the Great Lakes Brewery has the BEST beer and really amazing food. If you are in Cleveland you should check it out!

But there isn't much else in Cleveland! If you wanted good bars I know those...

Hey neighbor!!

My hometown was Brockport, NY! Another SUNY town!!

That said, I'll name restaurants in Rochester

Fine Dining - 2 Vine
Burgers - Don's Original at Seabreeze (Lake Ontario)
Bar Food - Zebb's Grill
Local Favorite - Garbage Plate at Nick Tahou's
Steak Sub - Cobb's Hill Pizza

Brunch - Belhurst Castle - this is a bit of a drive, it's in Geneva, NY along the shore of Cayuga Lake - and I just happen to know a very nice B&B to stay in in the village of Waterloo - owned by dear friends - The Gridley Inn muchlove

I had to know. According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
A Garbage Plate is a combination of one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (Haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad). On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, ketchup, and Nick's proprietary hot sauce, a greasy sauce with spices and ground beef. It's served with rolls or Italian toast on the side,[3] which is made fresh at the bakery next door

Our favorite local spots are Fenicci's and Marco Polo Garden.

The former has been a Hershey landmark since 1935. From the website:
"Welcome to Fenicci's of Hershey. The building, originally built in
1921, has been home to many interesting and varied businesses. Over the
years it has hosted a photo shop, pool room, butcher shop, tailor,
grocery store, news agency, beauty shop, taxi service, soda fountain,
the H. B. Reese Candy Company, and a jewelry store, as well as the
DeAngelis Restaurant which is now Fenicci's of Hershey."
They have maintained the original family recipes and atmosphere for all that time. It's really a special place to eat. The food is out of this world.

The latter is one of those 'best kept secret' kind of places. It's a small nondescript house in a residential neighborhood. Inside is equally small, but comfortable. The food is authentic, if not somewhat upscale, Chinese. It's made from scratch, and it is very apparent. Everything we've had is amazing. It' the kind of place who's schedule people plan their work week around (they are closed Su/Mo).

Sounds disgusting I know...but OMG the plates are so good. My favorite combination is cheeseburgers with home fries and macaroni salad with only "hot sauce"...think of very spicy chili, very finely ground beef and no beans. It's not quite the same but as close a comparison as I can come up with.

Anyone here from Seattle? I'm headed out there in October...

Hi,

I live in Voorhees, NJ, about 12 miles (about 19 km) east of Philadelphia.

We have Applebee's, Fuddruckers, Five Guys, Olive Garden, Quiznos, and Panera Bread. Local non-chain restaurants:

Country Club Diner. New Jersey is the king of diners, and the food here is decent but not great.

Italian: La Locanda Brick Oven Pizzeria; Pasta Pomodoro; Passariello's; Blue Grotto (excellent; homemade); Fieni's (also excellent). In Philly I recommend La Scala's which is at 618 Chestnut Street.

In Voorhees, Yamato and Umi are good for Japanese cuisine.

For Indian food, try Coriander Indian Bistro.

Ariana's is an Afghan restaurant.

Chinese: Chez Elena Wu serves French and Chinese cuisine and is considered one of the top Chinese restaurants in S. Jersey. Another good one, more affordable, is New Yong's Village.

Thai: Bangkok City; Som Suk.

We just got five guys out here in the Cleveland area . . so far, I like it.

I saw Fuddruckers on your list, and it made me miss it . . mad they are in MN, but not Ohio.

I didn't know there was anyplace that didn't have Fuddrucker's. Is there another chain burger place there?

Within the last year we started getting a few five guys, but other than that it is just Mcdonalds, burger king, wendys, steak and shake, et al

This thread is getting me so hungry! I'm going to have to schedule some road trips! I've never eaten at Fuddruckers -- what's the best thing on the menu to try?

Does anyone else besides Upstate NY have "hots sauce?" I haven't seen it anywhere else, and everyone heads right for the "hots" restaurants when they get home... I think a couple of the places actually ship that stuff (can you imagine the smell?!?).

CDub's Dallas Suggestions are good, but he has no Tex-Mex or other similar food:

My Favorite pure Tex-Mex is Mi Cocina, but my favorite Latin American food is by far Gloria's. It's Salvadoran food, although they serve Tex-Mex as well and it's fantastic. I could just go there and eat chips and black bean dip and be happy.

I'm going to chime in with Sheetz Made to Order subs. It's a chain of gas stations in the mid-Atlantic (mostly PA, MD), and, I gotta tell ya, I love those subs.

We have Sheetz in NC too...I love their breakfast sandwiches. They make one on a roll that's kind of like a big soft pretzel yummmmmmmmmmm

I'm usually not anywhere near one for lunch, I might have to make better plans laugh

Sheetz is not bad for what it is. I wouldn't put it in my "favorites" category, BUT when you're traveling it's nice to come across one and know that you can count on some decent quick service food.

Sheetz does have good food, and drinks. Speaking of regional treats, I love the PA pretzel fascination. Pretzels are a big deal here. Pretzel sandwiches, like those at Isaac's, are SO GOOD!

I've eaten at two of my favorite places in the last week or so due to this thread. Was delicious, both times. I feel like twice the man I was before said meals, but whatever...

laugh And 2x better, I'm sure!

I love regional foods in PA. Where else can you come across so many "Cheese Houses" just driving on the highway! I mean, come on?!? That's awesome. A whole barn full of cheese. Yum.

You can do a lot with a pretzel. They're under-utilized in other parts of the country I think.

I concur. I had never heard of using them for anything other than snacking (hard or soft) before I moved here. I have seen the light of pretzel rolls and such. We buy them to make sammies at home all the time. Love 'em.

MM!! Pretzel sandwiches. Anyone have any good suggestions for where to buy "pretzel" breads to make those?

You said you haven't been to Le Cellier yet right? They have great pretzel bread they serve with the meal.

Not that any of you will probably make it up to Burlington, Vermont (though you should, it's really a lovely town), BUT....

If you like Asian food, you MUST go to A Single Pebble. Among the best Asian food I've ever had anywhere, and the servers are all really knowledgeable about the food. The mock eel (made with shiitake mushrooms) is to die for. Not a cheap restaurant, but not too expensive, either. And so very worth it. Lunch is more affordable, but I'm not sure the mock eel is available at lunch.

Best Pub Grub (good and cheap) - Vermont Pub and Brewery. Try the beer sampler and the sweet potato fries.

Best Pizza - American Flatbread - but be sure to make a reservation, they are always packed.

Best salad bar - The Windjammer on Williston Road.

If you want to be really adventurous and drive the 2.5 hours up to Lyndonville, Vermont, the world's best diner is there: The Miss Lyndonville. The diners here in Burlington really don't compare.

I've got tons of other suggestions on my blog. Look for the SoloFriendly Burlington pages.

How big of a town is Burlington?
