Just Got a Kindle. Any Must Have Books You Can Recommend?

I got a Kindle for Christmas, and I'm excited to get going with it. But I'm a kid in a candy store - I don't know what to pick first! Any must have books that y'all can recommend? I generally stay away from grisly mysteries or anything with too much really bad language. Thanks!

I really have to give a plug for any books by my favorite author Clive Cussler. I currently have 3 of his books WAITING to be read. When I read one of his books it really literally feels that I am there somehow in the plot. Great Author.

Go to the website, "Pixel of Ink". You can download a bunch of free books for your Kindle there. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I'll second what VL said - when I was commuting more I got hooked on his work via books on DVD. Really enjoyed.

I also really enjoyed The Underland Chronicles (Gregor the Overlander, etc.) by Suzanne Collins. It's a kid's series (grade 4-8, I think) but who said I had to grow up! It's kinda like Alice and the rabbit hole, but maybe a little darker.

Like Jeff, I'm into the fantasy kid series. After the Harry Potter series ended, I tried to fill the hole in my heart with the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. It wasn't quite Harry Potter, but I really did enjoy it. I've read all of the books in the series and then two books in his other series, and I'm anxiously awaiting book 3 which is due to come out in the fall.

Jeff, I'm starting to think we were separated at birth. wink

I don't know if they are available on the Kindle, but I recommend the Hannah Swensen Mysteries by Joanne Fluke. They are murder mysteries but not grisly. They're a easy read with great cast of characters and each book contains recipes.

Try The Hunger Games, also by Suzanne Collins. Trilogy. young adult but really good.
Also Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Action thrillers.
I personally love The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit is good, too.
Oh, The Book Thief. Awesome!

Thanks Everyone for the awesome recommendations! Keep them coming if anyone else has any, and I'll look these up! Oh - and welcome, Cee Tilford! We're happy you found us, and we'd love to "meet" you in an intro post! Are you a big fan of Disney?

Lizzy_B,

I started reading Donald E. Westlake when I was a teenager and continued until he died about 5 years ago. (So about 40 Years).

He wrote mystery comedies (or comic mysteries), several of which have been made into movies. I particularly like his early stuff, Bank Shot, The Hot Rock, God Save the Mark.

Light reads, lots of laughs. He has a recurring character in a lot of them, so you might see some marked as a 'Dortmunder' story.

PS He almost made me change my major in college from business, but I knew I would never be able to write that good.

I second The Hunger Games... amazing!!!

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo... if you can get past the first boring 100 pages its worth it!

Anything by Sophie Kinsella or Jodi Piccoult =)
