multiple resorts in one vacation????

Does anyone have experience doing this?

I'm planning a trip in 2012 and was thinking that to save money my fiance and I might split our time between a value and deluxe resort or a value and a moderate resort(staying the more expensive weekend nights at the value resort)....does any one do this?? I'm just worried that I'll end up wasting a day transferring hotels

things to consider

1. we'd be going during sept so its not very busy
2. we don't take a car and rely on disney transportation

-last time we were at disney we stayed at POFQ and loved it....the tentative plan is thurs to sun at POP then sun to thurs at either POFQ or AKL for a total of 8 nights (the savings paying for an extra 2 nights)

I've never done this but from what I understand (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), you have to make two separate reservations. Disney will transfer your luggage for you from one resort to the other. You can go to the parks after checking out and then go to the new resort to check in later on in the day / evening.

Yup! We may try it in a couple years. My parents want to use Jess and I as guinea pig one year and do the Board Walk with AKL.

I'm actually doing this on my next trip. I'm staying one night as a room only (no dining plan or park tickets) and the rest of the trip is at a different resort booked as a vacation package. I'd ask a travel agent to look into it. I used CAA (or AAA in the USA) and found them very knowledgeable and helpful. I can't speak for all their offices though.

I'm still not sure how we're getting from one resort to the other. We're going to ask Disney once we get their. I wonder if we'll have to take a cab? I'll let you know!

**EDIT*** I just read what JoAnn said and it sounds reasonable. Sounds like a Disney way of doing things!

all you should have to do is hop on a bus to dtd to get where your going. The dtd bus goes to all of the resorts.

OK... I am an expert at this! We did it last time this Feb. We went from POP to COR with no car, using only Disney transportation. Here is a step list...

1. Tell Bellhop service the night before to pick up your big luggage (stuff that you would have checked on the plane)
2. Gather your small stuff (Carry on size) you will be taking it with you.
3. Go to a park on a bus, taking your small stuff. Try to to chose a park that is not expected to be busy that day and is close to you. (Eg. Don't chose AK if you are in POR)
4. Arrive at chosen park, go to the bus stop of your new resort. (By the way, this has to be done in morning) Usually there will be no one there (along with no bus). If so, got to another bus, ask the bus drive to send one for your new resort, and go back to wait.
5. Arrive at your resort. Check in, get your room key, go to room. The big luggage is probably not there yet. Don't worry, it should be there by the end of the day.

The whole process took about 45-min. to an hour during off peak times. (Excluding step 1, which must be done the night before.) DO THIS IN THE MORNING! You can go to the parks after, and it is much less busy before 12. One more thing, always go up from a lower resort to a higher! Trust me, you do not want to have a Disney hangover before you even leave!

PS. You must have a split stay reservation for this to work.

thank you so much! the larger baggage was what I was most worried about (lugging it around and what not)

i'm pretty sure we are going to try this. I figure we can tack on an extra 2 days with out significant cost increase since the difference between a 7 to 9 day ticket is pretty small!

thank you for the info Brandmaster!

Such great advice going to the less expensive resort first! I would hate to spend the rest of my stay wishing I were back at the nicer property.

We went from Pop to AKL. Do the value at the beginning of your trip so when you are tired you can enjoy the deluxe more.

Call bellservices the night before and put everything by your front door. Head out to whereever you want to go, we spent the day at AK. When we were ready to go to dinner at Boma we took the AKL bus to AK, checked in and they delivered our luggage.

They told us it could take up to 5 hours to transfer luggage so keep anything you might need, but there's no reason to go check in immediately. Your tickets for the parks will still be good, so enjoy your day first, then head to the new hotel.

I do split stays all the time but I have a car so I just pack up and go.
It's a great way to focus on a particular park so you don't need to park hop.

I usually do a DTD area stay and then a park stay.

I stay Sunday thru Friday in DVC and then move to a cheaper hotel for the weekend or start off the weekend in the cheaper hotel and move to the deluxe DVC during the week when it's cheaper points wise. I do this with DVC so not sure if it's the same paying cash. confused

Never stayed at more than one resort on any one trip but in the 57 trips Jan and I made we spent all of our time resort hopping. I will guess that we have been to every 'on property' Disney resort about 20 times each. Some more and some less. Great fun and a whole lot cheaper than the parks.

Joe might be the World's most knowledgeable man on "resort hopping."

I might be Brad but Jan and I were never in a hurry. It seems like most everyone else is. We never were concerned how long we had to wait for a bus or boat or the mono rail. For us the riding on Disney transportation was as much fun as anything else.

It's do-able for sure! Lots of people do this..although I've never thought about it as a way to save money by doing the weekend at a value and the weekdays at a deluxe or moderate..that's a great idea.

I've never done it simply because our trips are usually pretty short (4-5 days) and we wouldn't want to miss valuable park time...but for a longer trip I'd consider it.
