Pre-Trip Planning and Re-Planning

Our upcoming fall trip has been a long time coming. My husband and I were in Disney World in the fall of 2010, 2011, and 2012. Due to a number of unplanned home improvements, we were unable to go in fall of 2013. We pretty much started planning this trip in late summer of 2013. We knew we wanted to do a bigger trip in honor of our 10th anniversary but we still had to be somewhat frugal. In the Summer of 2013 I signed up for Chase Air Tran Visa Card and got two free round trip tickets. I was thrilled. Of course it would be months until the flight schedules were open for October 2014 so other than saving money and imagining what the Seven Dwarves Mine Train would be like, there wasn't much we could do.

Finally in March of 2014, Air Tran opened up their flights through October. I knew we had to make our reservations quickly otherwise all the good reward flights would be gone. The Air Tran options weren't that great, but thankfully we could transfer the reward flights to Southwest and were able to book better flights with them. Then we called our friend who is a Disney Vacation Planner and booked our room at Pop Century. We were really hoping to stay at a moderate resort, but with our budget we realistically could only stay at a moderate if we got free dining. So for the time we were happy. We just had to wait until we were 180 days out to book our ADR's and hope that free dining would eventually get offered.

As Beauty and the Beast is my favorite, eating dinner at Be Our Guest was on our MUST DO list for our upcoming trip. The night before our 180 days out, I set my computer up to the Disney website, had my resort reservation info out, and had my credit card and phone ready. I set my alarm to 4:45 am so I could be ready to make reservations when they opened at 5:00 (central time). As soon as my alarm went off, I was out of bed. Once it hit 5am I was searching for reservations and I got it. On the last night of our trip I got a dinner reservation at Be Our Guest. I was ecstatic. Since I was online I went ahead and made a couple other reservations as well. I was really feeling like our trip was coming together. We just had to wait and see if free dining was offered.

About a week or two later our Disney Vacation Planner friend called to say she got word that free dining would be announced in the next day or two. Fabulous! We couldn't wait. When it finally was announced I just about cried (and not out of joy). The 9 days of our planned trip were within the two week window of October that the dining plan wasn't being offered. After a bit of investigating, I found out that there were no change fees for our airline flights so we could move our trip to a week later and get the free dining. Well, here's the next problem. Our trip was originally planned for the 3rd week of October, to move it to get the free dining we would go from October 27 to November 4th and the airline did not have November flights yet. I called and just changed our flight down to Orlando but I would have to wait to change our return trip until the flight schedule for November was opened.

Then we called our vacation planner to switch our week and book us at Coronado Springs. Unfortunately, with the change of trip dates, all the reservations I previously made were unusable, bye bye Be Our Guest. And with our new dates we were already at about 178 days to our trip and I was sure that B.O.G. would be booked. As soon as our planner got our resort reservation changed, I called Disney Dining. Again, I asked for a B.O.G. reservation for the last day of our trip. The woman there said that she wasn't sure if she would have anything, but she would try. So I held my breath and she came back and said she had a 7:30pm available. Awesome!!!! Then I rescheduled all our other reservations as well. Now I just had to wait for the flight schedule to be released so I could reschedule our return flight.

About two weeks later the flight schedule opened up and I was able to change our return flights. I have to say all the people I talked to at Southwest were extremely friendly and helpful. They were just about as nice and perky as the cast members at Disney. After all the anxiety and changes to our plan, I definitely need this vacation. It seems like it was a ton of craziness but we got free flights and free food so it was worth it. Plus, I get to eat at Be Our Guest! I can't wait.

SO glad to here that everything is finally falling into place for you! There are few things more frustrating than knowing what you want to do and not being able to secure parts of your trip that will make everything fall into place because of booking windows!

On our last couple trips, we've tried to slow down a bit and enjoy the atmosphere more instead of just racing to get everything done. We've done pretty well at touring a little more casually but of course being Disney, there is a certain amount of planning that we can't get away from. So we've been working on a list of must do's and really want to do's for this trip. Also, since we've been their somewhat frequently we have our lists of old favorites to do and new adventures to try.

Some of our must do's:
Eat at Be Our Guest (got my reservation)
Ride Seven Dwarves Mine Train (can't wait until the end of August when we can book our Fastpasses)
Ride Test Track-always a favorite of ours and haven't been on it since the update

Some of our really want to's:
Ride Soarin'-We haven't been on this for like 3 years. I have little patience for standing in long lines and somehow we always missed fastpasses for this and the stand by line was always like 45 minutes or more. Hopefully we can make it work on this trip.

Some of our Old Favorites:
Hollywood and Vine-I'm a pretty picky eater and this buffet seems like it has the most choices available.
Raglan Road-We love, love, love eating here. With both my DH and myself being musicians we always book our reservation around the time the dancers and band are scheduled.
Kilamanjaro Safaris-love to doing this first thing in the morning and sitting in the back row of the vehicle. We can turn around and get great photos out the back of the vehicle.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party-we did this last time we were there and loved it. The fireworks and parade were spectacular.

New Adventures: we always try to find something new and different to do on each trip
Behind the Magic Steam Trains Tours- we are so excited for this. Has anyone done this or any other behind the scenes tours?
Tusker House for Breakfast- have never eaten here or done any sit down restaurant for breakfast at WDW.
Try new foods at the Food and Wine Festival-I can't wait for the menu's to come out.

Do you have any must do's or favorites that you do everytime?

Those all sound like really fun things! Since you can only get a FP for Test Track or Soarin, I would recommend getting to the park early and riding the one you don't have the FP for first thing, because the line only gets longer. Tusker House was a great breakfast buffet! There are a lot of interesting choices, but also plenty of normal fare for pickey eaters mickey

My must do's are Tower of Terror, Haunted Mansion and Signature Dining. Hubby's is golf. For the Signature Dining, it doesn't matter where, but all of our dinners are sit-down fine dining establishments. If we're there for our anniversary, we always eat at Victoria & Albert's. Our try-to-do's are all the roller coasters.

We loved Tusker House! We did our reservations for 1030a so we could sample the breakfast and they were switching over to lunch so we sampled that too!

We have done the Steam Trains tour and most other ones - Keys to the Kingdom (twice), Backstage Magic (all day tour), Undiscovered Future World, Marceline to Magic Kingdom, and Backstage Safari. We have loved them all, but Marceline was our favourite.
The steam train tour is in our September TR and KTTK and Marceline can be found in the January TR.

I'm so glad to hear that about the buffet. My DH is a big breakfast person and I am not. We thought this would be a good option because he can eat till his stomach is content and I should be able to find some simpler, lighter things to munch on.

I just read your trip report on the Train tour. I'm even more excited to go now. And I love the pictures on Main Street with nobody there. We're not morning people, but we will definitely be getting up as early as possible to try and get some time to pictures at an empty train station. I can't wait!!!!

My husband and I did the steam train tour on our honeymoon. It was my wedding gift to him. He's a huge train buff (especially steam trains). We had a blast! I think you will really enjoy it, and we both thought it was worth the $.

I am so happy for you! I know how much stress and time goes into planning and making it work with schedule, budget and time available. yay yay yay

For DH and I we have our own particular loves, but we are taking friends who are basically newbies with, so it will be a different fun too - watching amazement thru others' eyes!
Since we are all in music, we love FoLK (and so glad it's open), Beauty a/t Beast, Hall of Presidents and American Experience. good food (trying Narcoossee AND Be Our Guest this time) but also the rides that make us happy: the mountains, will try the mine train, Soarin, the mission mars ride (name?) but we love going to the countries and experiencing the music.

For me too, I ALWAYS get a pearl in Japan and this year I want it in a ring or if twins, I want earrings. DH always tries to find a piece of jade in China or a crystal piece to go with his Sorcerer Mickey.

You will enjoy it I'm sure. It's one of the few places that you are encouraged to take pictures backstage. And, you are done early enough to still enjoy a full day at the park!
