Preferred Airline?

What are your favorite and least favorite airlines? Due to price, service, connections? It'd be a great resource for people to have some reviews and insights into several different options.

(Especially AirTran. Why can't I get on board with these guys?)

My most favorite airline is Southwest. There's at least a dozen flight from Chicago's Midway airport to Orlando each day, and about half of them are direct flights. I get to choose where I sit, and I can always maneuver so that I'm not sitting near kids or in front of them (the seat-kicking syndrome).

And they still do not charge for checked luggage.

You know, I've never flown Southwest (mostly because none of the airports near me have ever been Southwest airports), but I keep hearing such great things about them. I never thought the "choosing your own seat" thing would be all that great until you just said you could avoid the seat kicking syndrome. REALLY good point. And charging for checked luggage is so prevalent these days that I figured everyone was doing it. Great to know they're not.

Does Southwest have a frequent flier program?

One of my favorites is JetBlue, which I've always loved since it began. Not sure if they charge for checked baggage yet or not...

If you get to board in the first group, you almost have the entire plane to choose from. They do "pre-board" families between the first boarding group and the 2nd boarding group, so there's a risk that a child could sit behind you. But I always try to sit towards the back anyway, and most families tend to not go that far back. So I'm typically safe from seat-kicking or infant crying.

Yes. The Southwest Rapid Rewards program. They give you points for your flight, not miles. So you could fly a short distance and still get the same points.

I would like to fly JetBlue some time, but they still do not have a direct flight yet between Chicago and Orlando. Besides, they fly out of O'Hare, which is notorious for backup and delayed flights due to the heavy traffic. Midway is less hectic.

For me, I would have to give a slight nod to Jet Blue over Southwest but those are the two that stand out head and shoulders above all the others,
Jet blue has the built in TV sets that help pass the time away during the flight and I really prefer the assigned seating over Southwest. On the times that we have flown with Southwest I have seen too often the "I want to be first" mentality where they actually sit on the floor in front of the boarding gate. Do they really think that they will run out of seats and have to be strapped to the wings confused .Jet Blue flies out of Logan airport, so they are about a 30 mile further drive that Southwest's Manchester NH terminal but worth it. And Jet Blue has better coffee (Dunkin Donuts) for those early morning flights. laugh

What IS that?! And WHY do I suffer from it, too? It happens at Disney World as well, if you'll notice--normal people suddenly becoming rude and have to "protect their stake" of pretty much useless things (like the front of a line at a 3D movie--you're all going to pretty much have the same view, and being in front just means you have to move all the way to the end of the row!).

The psychology of this is amazing--and, like I said, contagious, because I find myself doing it too, half the time eek

(soapbox over--and I'm a Jetblue Girl!)

I am not so sure if this occurs anymore with the new queuing system that SW has. It used to be they board the whole group, so someone standing in line early gets to get in first. Now, with not only the boarding group, but also the "monoliths" marking the various numbers on the boarding tickets, not many people stand in line anymore unless there isn't enough seats available at the gate. That's certainly the case whenever I've flown between Chicago and Orlando. We normally wait until either the arriving plane is unloading people, or when they start calling for pre-boarding. There isn't any need anymore to rush to stand in line.

As for assigned seats, I think they did a survey of their customers a while back, and the majority of their frequent flyers do not want assigned seats. I certainly prefer not to have assigned seats and given the freedom to choose my seats when I get on. But then gain, I'm usually in the first or, at worse, the 2nd boarding group, and I very seldom get bad seats. So most of us frequent SW customers prefer not to have assigned seats.

I happened to stop flying southwest right around the time the new system came in. Southwest is a very well run airline, but unfortunately out of Dallas they still have no direct flights to Orlando, so they're not feasible for that flight. Plus I'm always trying to get my Frequent Flyer status on AA so I tend to fly them.

The TV sets on Jet Blue however are hard to top.

I was not aware that SW had a new system in place to board, so that would help the mad rush.

Southwest - mostly because you don't have to pay extra for two checked bags and I need a LOT of stuff when I go to Disney!

I flew Jet Blue once and I loved it, but it isn't in my area.

US Air is by FAR my least favorite...both times I flew that airline, my bags got lost and I had to wait two-three days before getting them back...

was that on the way there or the way back? i'd be less angry if they messed up on the way back.

I don't know if It's where I live (Indianapolis) but whenever I go to book a Disney world flight AirTran is ALWAYS at least 200 bucks cheaper than anyone else. We usually pay about 400 bucks to fly to Orlando, all other airlines quote us between 550 to 800 bucks for the same flight times.

We are now looking for a flight to LAX (Disneyland trip 1) and things seem a little more competitive, however Airtran is still the cheapest option.

AirTran is generally one of the cheaper airlines around. Most people I've talked to have said there's a reason for that. Have you been satisfied with their service and on-time record marzyar?

I love Jetblue. I'll even pay a little more for them if needs be so I can get the TV to watch. It really helps pass the time. Plus their seats are roomier and more comfortable than other airlines. And they have better snacks.

Of the non-discount airlines, I love Continental. That is usually my
2nd choice behind Jetblue. I've always gotten good customer service
from them, and their flight times work really well for me.

I have not been able to try Southwest or Virgin (since they don't fly out of Vermont), though I've heard good things about both. However, I've also heard Southwest's boarding process described as a "cattlecar". Don't think I'd like that.

AirTran annoys me no end because every time I look at their flights, they want me to change planes twice--essentially traveling through 4 airports! I did that once, on my first trip to Vegas, and it was the longest day of my life. No way in heck am I doing that again. The more times you have to change planes, the greater the risk you'll miss one of them.

Of the big airlines, Continental is by far the best run in my opinion. I fly American all the time because I fly out of DFW and because I have status with them, but sometimes when I visit Houston I use Continental and I've always had good experiences. Plus I chat with a lot of the frequent flyer crazies and they are all very pro-Continental as well.

the only problem I have ever had was my layover in ATL last year was 30 Minutes and the flights were in 2 different sections of the airport (If you have been to ATL you know what I mean) We really had to beat feet to make it.

Besides that they have been on time with my flight and my drink.

Glad to hear a dissenting opinion. I think that's another common complaint with Airtran though. As Solofriendly says there is generally at least one layover involved. But of course if you want to save money a few extra stops can be worth it.

That's good to hear! I've never flown AirTran, but it's always the cheapest that pops up for me as well. Why do I think AirTran is the new name for one of the airlines that had lots of crashes in the 80's?

I'm a Southwest guy, mainly because they offer a ton of flights out of Nashville, and their freebie policy was sooooo good in the early days when you bought on the net. (Buy four flights, get one free. Sadly, this is no longer the case)

I liked them in the early days because they were innovative and fun, and didn't take the fact that they were an "airline" too seriously.

Even though I'm still a big fan, they've changed some over the years, due to their success. The flight attendants aren't nearly as entertaining as they once were, but for the cheap fares I can live with that.

They also appear to be an excellent company to work for. A friend of my wife's has been a flight attendant with them for a half dozen years or so, and he LOVES it and makes pretty good money too!

I was a NorthWest fan for a long time, until on successive weekends I ended up stranded in Minneapolis one night because I couldn't get to Missoula, Montana and the following weekend I spent most of a Sunday trying to get out of Philadelphia back to Nashville. My big problem was that they wouldn't TELL us anything. In fact, after the two weekend problems, I wrote the President of Northwest (at that time) a long letter, stating just that. I was courteous, and said no one would object to problems if they would just trust us to understand WHY there were problems. I got a nice letter back with some $5 airport food vouchers and 2500 frequent flyer miles!!!! clapping clapping (And I was thinking I might get a free ticket! laugh )

Haven't flown JetBlue, but I hear good things about them too.

My whole problem on the Missoula trip was that we could get no information. We were supposed to leave Nashville around 4PM, going to Northwest's hub in Minneapolis, where we'd change planes and have two flights to Montana.

Problem was, we stood around the Nashville airport until 9PM, and Northwest would only tell us there "has been a delay, we should be leaving shortly". For FIVE hours. By the time we left, we KNEW there was no way we'd get to Missoula that night.

I have no problem with airlines fixing problems when they have them and if that causes a delay, so be it. My problem is with them not giving us any information whatsoever.

If the engine fell off the plane, TELL ME. I'm a big boy and can live with the fact you had to tighten the bolts. To be honest, a five hour delay and we never DID know what happened.

(Unlike a flight to Hawaii once that was delayed a couple of hours because on the bathrooms on board was somehow backed up or something. Took them a while to "clean up" THAT plane.)

It's always frustrating that they obviously aren't particularly concerned about keeping you informed. That's true of every airline I think. They don't want you to wander off in case they get an opportunity to take off so they just say "Could be any time."

They only had 1 crash though, right? Which is a lot these days comparatively. Always amazes me how few planes crash.

Yes, there was only 1 crash. and It was a DC-9. Airtran uses Boeing Aircraft, Widely considered the best in the industry. Heck, you can loose the top half of the plane and still land it.

I fly JetBlue as much as possible. I did take an AirTran flight last trip to WDW, but I like JetBlue better. Jetblue has one non-stop each way for us here in Rochester now, as does AirTran. JetBlue's schedule is better.

JetBlue still allows 1 free checked bag.

We don't have Southwest. Alot of my friends use them & like them tho.

My least favorite is probably Delta. They overbook too much. Getting bumped on the way home isn't so bad, but alot of my trips are for long weekends & getting bumped on the way down would really suck.

Anything you particularly disliked about AirTran?

I've loved JetBlue since they started. TV is a major plus for me, since I never have time to watch very much when I'm home.

There was nothing I really disliked about AirTran, I just liked JetBlue better. I like the TV & the nonstop schedule.
I wouldn't hesitate to fly AirTran again tho if the price & schedule were right.

I think TV on the plane is a feature that it's really hard to go without once you've had the experience.
