Rage from the Fibro Girl... New York Post: Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides

Rich Manhattan moms hire handicapped tour guides so kids can cut lines at Disney World

mad Have you read this article? I think I may be physically ill. Seriously.

As if it isn't hard enough for someone with a disability to navigate Walt Disney World while managing their special needs, public perception and criticism is a very real concern for this of us with invisible illness. I'm just flabberghasted that someone from our own community (the tour guide has an autoimmune disease and uses an ECV) would book tours for perfectly able bodied families and let them have the advantages of her Guest Assistance Card. People who game the system like this make it more difficult for each and every one of us struggling with physical disabilities. High profile debacles like this that create hostility from able bodied people and make them think we're all cheats. I am in utter shock that this is even an issue, but there it is in the New York Post.

I'm not saying that a someone in an ECV shouldn't be a tour guide, that part is great. But that tour guide should not be using her GAC to get the group on board if they don't qualify for one on their own. It's not only unethical, but completely unprofessional and sets a disturbing precedent in the tour industry as well.

Can "human" beings get any lower? Just throw your money around and buy a handicapped person at will. Kristen there is a special place in hell for people like that. I hope I never become one of those who judges others who uses an ECV.

Thats awful! And what a terrible thing to teach your children. Not only are they teaching them to be dishonest but also that they can do whatever they want because they have money.
Shame on these people.

Hate reading stories like this. Very sad that she thinks its ok to use people like that and I'd really like to hear the tour guides side of the story.

I think I'm too mad about this right now to even consider that she has a reasonable "side" to the story. It would be interesting to hear what the explanation is.

I saw this earlier, then realized it was from the NY Post. So I'm reserving my rage for the actual, respectable report of it. I have to believe that people aren't this scummy.

Is the NY Post known for questionable sources?

Okay... just looked the answer to that question up myself and it seems that they are very much sensationalists.

Oh, yes. They were the first to report that 12 people were killed in the Boston bombings. They also put a picture up of two people as suspects who had nothing to do with anything, AND reported that Saudi national was being questioned/held.

Just one example of sensationalistic reporting. So I just look to them for celebrity gossip. Smile

I did a little more research and the "social anthropologist" they got the information from is hocking a new book and website. So I'm becoming a bit dubious. Now I don't know what to think.

I just Googled this story and every site keeps referring back to the NY Post story. I agree with you Kristen. I don't know what or who to believe.

If it is true, its sad, but I'm hoping its just sensationalized.

I read this elsewhere today, I read it about 3 times before I had calmed down enough to reply. I totally agree with everything you said Kristen. If we don't get enough stick as it is, without 'one of our own' making it even harder.

I read this in my news feed at work this morning and I knew you'd hit red line on this one. Angry I'd like to think that the tone of the article was deliberately inflammatory but (sadly) the subject matter rings true. It disgusts me to see people abusing the Guest Assistance Card in this manner, but to turn a profit? Abominable. The tour guide and customers should be banned. mad

I think it is a sick thought, that now, is out there. Now disgusting people are going to think about this and use it to their advantage. Which is sad.

I hope this story is full of half-truths and exaggerations. But I'm sure there are people who would actually do this. And yes, it's despicable. Doesn't WDW have VIP passes that give people front-of-the-line access? If rich people want to skip lines they should buy those.

That could be the worst part, because now people who would have never had that thought have it in there head. Once the genie is out of the bottle, it's dern heard to stick it back in there.

Heather of DininginDisney fame tweeted a link out to this response, which I enjoyed.

Seriously, people. Surely you can do better as a human being, can't you? It's such a shame.

Thanks for this link Jeff. Loved what Pilar wrote. I would never think to do this no matter what my issue may be. It is just so wrong in so many ways. Angry

I agree...the sense of entitlement is astonishing and just revolting.

This story has without a doubt the possibility of having been sensationalized by the Post...but as they say...where there's smoke, there's fire.

The whole thing is just disappointing...it diminishes the actual needs of those with disabilities. It's not fair to those who truly have needs to be looked at twice because of the actions of people like those referenced in the article.

As someone who has previously used a GAC due to injury and the daughter of someone with fibro (can't stand for long periods), I was disgusted, but I can't say I'm shocked. I bet this happens ALL.THE.TIME. Of course, most of us who are fine, upstanding (and not rich) citizens with morals wouldn't even consider this, but there are always people out there looking for the easy way out. I just hope Disney, who is AWESOME for people with disabilities (or injuries!), doesn't change their policies b/c of the scam artists.
