Your Thoughts on the Typhoon Lagoon Wave Pool

So, I love that this particular activity in Typhoon Lagoon has such die-hard fans and haters laugh

Some people go and spend the whole day in the wave pool, and others won't even go into the thing! What is YOUR opinion of the wave pool?

I was raised that you never ever go in the ocean. It's dirty and dangerous lol so I have never stepped foot in the ocean. That being said, I LOVE the wave pool because it's sort of a chance for me to ride waves and jump through them since I was never able to! While I am grown and of course could go in the ocean now, and upbringing of oceanic fear prevents be from doing so. I love the wave pool!

I loved Wave pools when I was a kid, but once someone characterized them as a giant toilet, I got a little grossed out! ;D

My mom is a huge fan, though -- she'll go in and stay in til she's all pruney!!

I liked the wave pool okay. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. I will say it's much better when it's not a wall-to-wall sea of people, that sucks. When you have enough room to enjoy yourself it's fun. I have to say, though, I am amazed more people don't drown in the thing.

For some reason, my clumsy self keeps skinning my knees in the wave pool! Not sure why I can't just say upright! Smile

re: drowning:

In my experience it can be pretty hairy in the deep end (where the wave generator is) even for a relatively strong swimmer, when there are so many people. Seems like a struggling swimmer (or child) could go unnoticed for quite some time before a lifeguard were able to intervene.

All that said, it's still quite fun. If you're unsure of your ability, stay nearer to the "shore" and you'll be fine.

Good points -- never thought about swimming too close to the wave generator!

I didn't think much about it either, until I tried it Angel

I wasn't right up against it or anything, I just wanted to go out a little further than the masses so I wasn't swimming in flesh.

Jason HATES this wave pool (but loves most of them). His issues is that he wears glasses, so when he is in the wave pool, he is blind and get knocked down when you are blind...and it isn't much fun! Last time we went, he got knocked down pretty hard and we got separated and he got scared, so I don't think we will do it again.

Until that moment, I LOVED it! I am not a big ocean fan. i love boogie boarding and jumping waves and all of that fun stuff, but am terrified of all of the animals that bite and sting. So wave pools are great, especially ones that have real waves! I could probably spend hours in the wave pool there

I always get a bit freaked out when I'm swimming in the ocean too. I look at all that water that I can't see under and it weirds me out. But then I just focus on the statistics of the whole situation and how unlikely it is that something will happen to me. It's much more likely that I'd drown than get attacked by a shark. Although I'm not sure what the statistics are on jellyfish stings, which don't sound like much fun to me either.

I am sure I would love the wave pool if I could get over the idea that I have in my head that all waterparks are just great big toilets.

This actually happened to me at wave pool here in Wisconsin, got sucked under and no one noticed. sad Lucky for me the wave cycle was almost over.

Between this thread and LifeIsForLiving's story, I'm pretty sure I'm never getting into any water besides a bath again.

Oh wow -- that's really scary! Have you been able to do pools and things again since that?

I'm realizing reading this thread that while I loved ocean swimming when I was a kid, ignorance is bliss. Now that I know the kinds of things that are under there, I prefer being on top of the water in a boat or kayak or something.

I just got back from Disney and went to Typhoon Lagoon for the first time. I think the wave pool is dangerous! It knocked chubby me off my feet. My 9 year old daughter was terrified and got out right away. The big wave is just too much for the average swimmer, in my opinion. Besides swamping you under water, it drags you along the bottom and you get all scraped up. The little waves during the bobbing time are much more fun! Loved snorkeling at the shark reef, though!

CN -- Thanks for this review (and welcome to WDWFG!). I agree that the shark reef is much more my speed than the wave pool -- I wish they'd give you more time in there! How was your trip to WDW overall? (I bet HOT!)

Welcome to the boards! Sorry to hear you had a rough time in the wave pool.

I've never actually done the wave pool. Do they have different settings at different times?

I never thought about the ocean being a dangerous place until I served on submarines. Hey, we got the 'big bucks' and all the chicks so that made up for it.

You definitely got lucky with that career choice, Joe!
