Disney Infinity was released a little more than a month ago and is on its way to becoming a hit.
Close to 294,000 starter kits were sold in the month of August, according to stats released by a market research firm.
In Disney Infinity, players can mix and match their favorite Disney characters and those characters come to life and play together in a virtual "toy box." Players can build and customize their own virtual worlds using characters, settings, vehicles, and more.
The game also includes "Play Sets" where players can solve puzzles, explore famous locations from Disney properties, and battle enemies. The starter kit retails for about $75.
The next Disney Infinity play set will be Toy Story, and players can play the game as Buzz Lightyear, Woody, or Jessie while embarking on an adventure to a new planet with the little green aliens. Other new characters coming to the game include Jack Skellington, Rapuznel " who will be the first princess in the game " Wreck-It Raply, Vanellope von Schweetz, and Agent P.
For Disney Infinity, the upcoming holiday season is the true test. That's when sales will determine if Infinity is really the mega-hit the company's interactive division needs.
Disney Infinity cost nearly $100 million to develop and the company spent a good deal of money to market the game. The closest competitor to Infinity is the Skylanders game from Activision. That game sold about 100,000 starter kits when it debuted in 2011.
