Via Napoli

So The Disney Food Blog posted the Via Naploi menu last week....

Appetizers will include:
[ul][li]Sicilian eggplant with olives and raisins[/li][li]arancini
(fried saffron risotto balls) with meat ragù, mozzarella and pomodoro
sauce
[/li][li]corn-crusted fried calamari[/li][li]minestrone with basil pesto[/li][li]A shareable plate of arancini, mozzarella, calamari, portobella
mushrooms, asparagus, zucchini and carciofi (artichokes) is also
available[/li]
[/ul]
Main course salads will include:
[ul][li]Manzo (filet of beef) with greens, red onion, gorgonzola, apple and
cucumber with a red wine-mustard vinaigrette[/li][li]chopped salad with lemon chicken, greens, cantaloupe, cucumber, red
pepper, green beans, onions, almonds and pasta crisps with honey-citrus
vinaigrette[/li][li]calamari with arugula, carrots and fennel with orange vinaigrette[/li]
[/ul]
Pasta dishes will include:
[ul][li]candele (long, tube-shaped pasta) with sausage ragù[/li][li] linguine with seafood; malfadine (ribbon pasta) with guanciale
(unsmoked Italian bacon) and pomodoro sauce[/li][li]lasagna verde
[/li]
[/ul]
The Wood-fired
pizzas
, which is what Disney is hoping the restaurant is
known for, will be made with caputo flour imported from Southern Italy,
San Marzano tomatoes, handmade mozzarella, and water from a local spring
just like in Italyâs Campania region. The 10-inch, 20-inch or 1/2
meter-sized pies will come in a dozen choices, from a simple pizza
Margherita with tomato, mozzarella and basil to carciofi with artichoke,
potato, pecorino cheese, prosciutto and cantaloupe.

Also available will be Piatti alla Parmigiana, which
are dishes topped with Parmesan and mozzarella gratinée. These will
include veal, chicken, and eggplant.

Finally, the desserts! These will include:
[ul][li]tiramisù[/li][li] zeppole di ricotta (ricotta cheese-fried dough, whipped cream and
chocolate sauce);[/li][li]apple cake with almond sorbetti[/li][li]vanilla gelato with almond cookies and amarena cherries[/li]
[/ul]
What do we think of this? Personally, I have been SO excited about this since I first heard about it. I love pizza and (in my opinion) I think it's what WDW has been totally lacking. I love the variety in the toppings..I only wish they would sell them by the slice so I could sample tons of different types!

I wonder if they WILL sell by the slice. I think it would be a great additional counter service option (after all, Italy doesn't have a counter service option, right?)

I'm looking forward to trying this out when we go to WDW this Fall, but so far you can't make ADRs.

Seems like a waste to have good pizza and not sell it by the slice. Of course I'll believe they have good pizza when I see (eat) it.

Wow, I wasn't that excited when we talked about this before but seeing the details about the pizza I'd really like to check it out.

It really does sound delicious. I hope there are other pasta dishes, though -- I'm not sure I want any of those.

I'm intrigued to try cantaloupe on pizza. At first I was pretty grossed out when I read it..but after thinking about it I really love pineapple on my pizza..so basically it's all fruit.

I have a feeling this pizza will be more USA than Italy. We've been to the place that's run by the same people in Disneyland and it's great pizza, by my American tastes. It's very New York. To be fair though, if you've only tried WDW pizza, I can understand why you think ours is horrible. silly

Honestly Orlando is kind of a pizza wasteland. That's why I'm looking forward to via Napoli. I'm a bit of a pizza snob and I liked Naples 45 in Disneyland which is the same company and menu.

I would expect there are some good pizza joints, we just aren't aware of any of the small local ones. Just have to ask some CM's or others who live in the are where to get some good pizza.

Robyn,
There are about 100 thousand pizza parlors in the USA. Some have horrible pizza and some are outstanding. I remember eating pizza in a Pizzaria in Brooklyn N.Y. when I was 7 years old and eating pizza in Naples when I was 20 and in Portsmouth England when 21.. Now I'm pushing 75 and have consumed plenty of pizza through the years. Some is good and some is not so good but I believe we have more choices here in the USA than anywhere else in the world. Ya just need ta keep tryin kid.

I think Joe's got a good point. We've got more bad pizza in the USA than most places, but we've got more good pizza too! It's a big country.

I try to avoid pizza on vacation because I'm always so disappointed. If we do nothing else right, north NJ has amazing pizza! I guess I could try a piece for lunch or something. As for the rest of the menu, I am a picky eater and would not eat any of those options. I'm a bit less excited now for the restaurant but there are plenty of other choices to choose from at Epcot so no loss!

Yeah the pizza is less compelling if you're from the NY area, or if you're from the Chicago area and like deep dish. Still it's nice to have the option.

I hope it's not too blunt, but I've got to say people who haven't had any good pizza outside of [your town here] just haven't had enough pizza. I have had great pizza all over the country, including NY. Some of my favorites were in Corona (CA), Albuquerque (NM), Brooklyn (NY), and I've found several top-notch places here in PA.

--edit: Mind you I have not had much (I'm not sure I've had any) pizza in Orlando, but I would be willing to bet there's some good pizza even there if you look.

Surprisingly enough I've had good pizza in South Carolina..so it does exist outside of the upper east coast!
Although..the owner of the restaurant IS from New York..so this might have something to do with it!

I've been to Cali. many times since my dads 4 siblings live there. The bread just doesn't cut it to me. As for Orlando, I've just never found anything with good bread or sauce! I'm not saying it doesn't exist- just that I wouldn't jump on trying it because it's never been great before.

LifeIsForLiving has a good point in that good pizza DOES exist elsewhere. We've discovered a good place in Dallas and there's a great place in Austin. However, CNDF's point is valid too. In the NYC if you go get some pizza, there' s a good chance it's decent. In other places you have to KNOW which places are okay and some are TERRIBLE.

Very true. I'm a horribly picky eater which doesn't help! But I do love my pizza. So, if anyone knows any good spots in the Orlando area, I would give it a try. We will be in Disney for the soft opening and now my boyfriend wants to try Via Napoli's pizza. So I guess I actually will be eating some and I will let you know my take on it!

I only found good pizza in one place in Orlando and it's all the way up near UCF...about 40 miles from Disney!! Goodfella's in the plaza on the corner of Alafaya Trail and Colonial.

Now if you want good deli, you can find that at TooJays...the closest one I know of is on East Colonial, in the plaza where Barnes & Noble is located

I've heard some folks recommend flipper's pizza in Orlando. Anyone heard of it?

Great suggestions Millie!

Is that the Goofella's chain? It's not bad if so.

Brad and Jess have good points. I think some of the places known to do certain types of food well don't necessarily have the best _______ on the planet (mind you I think there are a few exceptions e.g. wings in Buffalo), but when you eat ________ at a new place there it's more likely to be good. For me it's not so much about the style of pizza, but the quality. When you go somewhere that makes their dough fresh, uses fresh (real) cheese, etc. it's probably going to be a good pizza.

Started a 'Favorite Pizza' thread here.

I don't think they're a chain. Here's a link to their website. I can personally attest to the quality of their food. Having married a NYer and lived on Long Island for a couple of years and visited family there every year...I've had some pretty good pizza in my life Smile)
