Tidbits from WDW: Attractions and Restaurants

Here are a few attraction- and food-related news tidbits from around Walt Disney World.

First off, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has reopened after a long refurbishment with some changes. If you're heading out to take in the Magic Kingdom attraction, you'll see the Fastpass and Stand-by line entrances have been switched. The Stand-by queue area has been lengthened by quite a bit with the promise of additional props to be added to the waiting area in the weeks to come. As for the ride itself, not a whole lot appears to have changed; there are reports the coaster is smoother overall.

Highland Games Tournament Coming To Epcot This Summer

"Brave - The Highland Tournament Games" are coming to the Rose Walk in Epcot this summer. Starting June 1, Epcot will be hosting a series of kid friendly games based on its newest flick "Brave."

A number of activities will be available for kid participation, including a Mini Caber Toss, a Cake Toss, a Haggis Flip and archery. There also will be a kids' playground.

The real reason this story is mentioned on this Walt Disney World for Grownups site is the Rose Walk, where the games are planned to be held, will also be a site for enhanced wireless access.

'Poster Art of the Disney Parks' Book Coming to Disney Parks Soon

It's a book that's been four years in the making, and now it's almost ready to make its debut in Disney Parks Stores. "Poster Art of the Disney Parks," the creation of Disney Imagineers Vanessa Hunt and Danny Handke, showcases posters utilized by Disney to convey the essence of its theme parks and attractions.

The book includes over 300 posters and concepts, including some "never before seen" prints and almost all of the original 1950's Disneyland posters. Says author and Imagineer Hunt about her book:

Swan and Dolphin Named a Top 10 Meeting Hotel in U.S.

Earlier this month, Cvent, "the largest cloud-based provider of event management and venue selection solutions," named the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin to its list of Top Meeting Hotels in the United States. The Disney hotel was ranked at 7th in a list of 100.

To come up with the tops for its list, Cvent looked at some 80,000 hotels across the country and followed certain criteria. Among the info considered is the number of meeting rooms, total square footage of meeting space available and how much business the hotel garnered by meeting planners through the Cvent Supplier Network.

Online Job Fair For Walt Disney World Happening Now

It's a top destination for tourists . . . but would you like to work there? From now until April 29, Walt Disney World is hosting an online job fair.

Cast Member Killed In Hit And Run Accident

There's some sad news out of central Florida this week. Liu Ye, a 22-year-old Walt Disney World Cast Member from China, was killed earlier this week in a hit and run accident near Disney-owned property.

Ye was hit by a car Tuesday night while walking on a crosswalk near State Road 535 and Meadow Creek Drive. She died after being taken to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital.

First Look At Art of Animation Resort's Unique Check-In

It looks like Disney's Art of Animation Resort will be handling the checking in of guests in an updated, re-thought way when it opens in May. Gone is the long desk staffed by multiple cast members and in is a more personal check-in experience.

The resort has installed a series of small tables to serve as a check-in point for guests. Guests will be greeted individually by cast members who will assist them in getting settled into the resort.

In addition, guests will find the lobby filled to the brim with, appropriately enough, animation art from Disney movies.

Grand Floridian's Easter Egg Display

Looking for an Easter-inspired attraction to take in during your visit to Walt Disney World? You might want to head on over to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to take in their impressive Easter egg collection.

For fifteen years now, the resort's chocolatiers have been making a variety of eggs for the display. The eggs weigh in at nine to twelve pounds, and each one is totally edible with fondant, icing and sugar pieces used for decoration.

Tidbits From WDW: Cable and Bus Testing

Expanded cable for guests and a testing a new bus are a couple of interesting tidbits of news this week regarding the happiest place on earth.

First off, Walt Disney World Resort began offering expanded cable channels on their hotels' in-room televisions last week. A sampling of the new channels available to guests include: Fox News, Bravo, AMC, National Geographic, TBS, TNT, Travel Channel, WE tv, Syfy, Discovery, Bio, HGTV, TLC, History, Food Network and TV Land. A complete list of channels available to guests can be found on Channel 17.

Ridley Pearson To Preview and Sign Latest 'Kingdom Keepers' Book

About a year ago, we brought you news of the Ridley Pearson, the author of the popular young adult Kingdom Keepers series, book signing at Disney. Fans of the series will be excited to learn he's planning another trip to the Walt Disney World area, this time to promote the fifth book in his series.

Never one to pass up looking at a jewelry store, I had to stop and was delighted at what I found. These fun beads in rainbows of brilliant color are actually Disney Guide Maps and paper products collected from around Walt Disney World that have been turned into fun jewelry!
