Disney VoluntEARS Earn $1 Million for Central Florida Nonprofits

In recognition of the ongoing efforts of the Disney VoluntEARS, the Walt Disney World Resort has announced plans to give more than $1 million to Central Florida nonprofits.

The monetary donations are being made through the company's EARS to You grants.

So far this year, The Walt Disney Company has given more than 1,500 EARS to You grants to nonprofits in honor of the 308,000 hours of community service that were donated by VoluntEARS in 2013.

Walt Disney World Resort employs nearly 70,000 cast members in Central Florida and they are committed to investing in the community and improving life in the area.

The contributions to the local community include millions of dollars in taxes for local governments, leadership on community issues, and support of non-profit organizations through thousands of volunteer hours by cast members.

College football fans can buy tickets now for the 10th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge Presented by Disney.

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) football game featuring the North Carolina A&T Aggies of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Alabama A&M Bulldogs of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will be played at the University of Central Florida (UCF) on Sunday, August 31.

The game is the first meeting between the two universities.

Walt Disney World Resort Receives ‘Corporate Ally of the Year’ Award

The Walt Disney World Resort was honored with the Corporate Ally of the Year at the Pride in Business Awards gala in Orlando.

The Pride in Business Awards recognizes businesses and individuals who promote diversity, equality, and inclusivity in the workplace in Central Florida, and is presented by the Metropolitan Business Association of Orlando (MBA Orlando) which is Central Florida's LGBT chamber of commerce.

Disney Lobbying for Stronger Protection against Theme Park Ticket Fraud as it Relates to MagicBands

Theme park ticket fraud is an issue in Central Florida, home to some of the biggest theme parks in the world.

And Walt Disney World is lobbying for stronger penalties when it comes to fraud, in addition to stronger protections to apply to the MagicBands.

Under current Florida law it is illegal for someone to resell a multi-park or multi-day theme park ticket after it has been used once. However, the law requires the phrase "non-transferable; must be used by the same person on all days" to be on the ticket.

Unionized Walt Disney World Employees Preparing to Negotiate for Higher Wages

Nearly 37,000 unionized employees at the Walt Disney World Resort are preparing to negotiate for higher wages when their contract expires next month.

The workers are represented by six different local unions as part of a coalition called the Services Trade Council.

Walt Disney World Cast Members Create Special Holiday Bears for the Salvation Army’s Dress-A-Bear Program

Walt Disney World cast members recently designed 920 Disney Bears and Duffy Bears for the Salvation Army's Dress-A-Bear program.

The cast member created hand-made costumes or used ready-made costumes for the bears, creating princesses, cowboys, and bears that look like Disney characters. The bears will be given to children in Central Florida.

The design-a-bear has been a tradition for cast members for more than 15 years.

Venus Williams and Andy Roddick Set to Headline Mylan WTT Smash Hits Charity Tennis Event at Walt Disney World Resort

Two former number-one-in-the-world ranked tennis players - Venus Williams and Andy Roddick - will be headlining a charity night of tennis at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex this fall.

The event is the Mylan WTT Smash Hits presented by GEICO and it's co-hosted by Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King. This year's event is planned for Sunday, November 1 at the HP Field House and it locally hosted by Robert and Tricia Earl.

Walt Disney World Cast Members Participate in Hula Competition

Recently, several Walt Disney World cast members channeled the spirit of aloha at an annual hula competition in Orlando.

The Ho'ike Hawaii 16th Annual Hula Competition is an annual event that brings Hawaiian and Tahitian dancers and dance teams to central Florida for a friendly dance competition with others who share their love of the hula culture.

Disney Continues to Support Diversity through Sponsorship of NAACP Convention and Scholarship

Earlier in July month thousands of delegates from around the country attended the 104th Annual NAACP Convention in Orlando, and The Walt Disney Company continued its role as a sponsor of the convention.

A Walt Disney World cast member has been named the 2014 Disney VoluntEAR of the Year.

Kristen Lehrer, a resource manager at Disney's Animal Kingdom, was chosen by her fellow Disney cast members. She received a surprise celebration, a trophy, a handshake from Mickey Mouse, and a $2,500 contribution to the charity of her choice.
